As per the title thread, Is there a car out there that has:

6 cylinders - Inline or V, it doesn't matter that can manage 30mpg *on a B road commute*?

With a budget of £4k, what can you guys suggest?

That is a bloody rarity, maybe if you are a great grandad.

I suspect that would probably be on a long straight motorway? IS200's are not particularly light cars.

Also, the 30mpg would need to be achievable on a B-road commute.

I had an E36 328 with an auto box.

Rarely went on the motorway.

Drove it pretty hard.

Averaged low 20s.

My 328 used to average around 28mpg. Was a mix of driving but mainly slow moving traffic. Hard driving could easily drop that into the mid teens. On the flip side, 40 mpg is achievable if you have your nan in the back. A great car with no downsides.

My 328i Sport averaged 36mpg. Mostly motorway & b-roads.

Saab is a good once. 2.3 manuals should be good for 30+ also.

Only had it two weeks but have so far found : 4motion Passat V6 2.8 does 31mpg when the cruise is set at 77mph, 64mpg @ 50mph. I did a 420mile round trip South Oxfordshire to Sheffield then over the peaks to Market Drayton then back down to Oxfordshire and the average mpg was 26.7mpg. The trip over the peaks really dented the figure, steep hills and on the brakes, on the throttle, on the brakes is generally bad for efficiency. It cost £3K so is allowed to do a bt under 30mpg smile

my e46 328CI can get 30 MPG if driven carefully.

although i do run it on v power, if that makes any difference to the mpg.
