Be very careful here as i am not sure which light u mean...either the fan is on ( switch on console) OR and this is important, one of the belts ( fan belt) has broken and your water pump and i think alternator is not working...do not drive the car till u have checked this as u will damage the engine

hi orange, all the belts are intact, there are no problems with the engine, i have driven my car 70 odd miles over the last two days, the light that is on is orange, and it is the left hand side one right at the top of the instrument binnacle, directly dehind the top of the steering wheel, the reference to "defroster" to me seems to sugest perhaps a heated rear screen or mirrors, which the 308 does not have,

It's too cold to run out to the garage to check but I think you're right & that it simply indicates that you have the (interior) fan switched on.
In the 1970's this was probably seen as a technological marvel smile

Orange light, top left hand corner, is the so called defroster light. I've just checked the instruction book to see if it has any other purpose than indicating that the fan is on, and it hasn't. Fan switch is referred to as "Defroster Switch (FAN)". Seems that the fan - or as the book refers to it: "(FAN)" - is used to "..increase the air flow {warm or cold} when the car is running at low speed" or "For a fast windscreen defogging...."

My wife had the some problem just after I bought her the car and she pulled over on the way to Goodwood concerned that some mechanical evil was about to unleash itself. I was in another car and had to go and find her so gave her the advice "orange lights don't tend to be as bad as red lights."

As for the logic? Well, most of the other switches seem to make a light come on. Maybe they were worried that the defroster (FAN) switch would feel left out.
