E90 330d Particulate Filter

As above I have a 2006 E90 330d. It is showing around 38000 miles and is due a service. Today it displayed a message on the iDrive screen about the Particulate Filter. It said this needs attention by a dealer but I can keep driving for now. I spoke to a friend who is a mechanic and he said this will be probably need changing. Price new from BMW £800. I will probably just pay the money obviously but I am a little concerned that this has happened to my car when it is not really that old. Am I expected to renew this part every 3 / 4 years or 38000 miles. The engine management has been reprogrammed and a friend who works with Audi cars said such reprogramming on the 170 bhp 2 litre tdi engine can cause the dpf to fail. Has anyone else had this with their car?
