Bought an A4... Big Mistake
Discussion
Hi there,
Recently i have been trying to choose what car to buy after selling my 54 plate 3.0d X5. I love bmw's and have done so for the last 12 years after working for Sytners in Nottingham. I have been reading Total BMW for the last 10 years and i am a total BM nut.
To cut a long story short, i wanted a 4wd but not another X5 as i was not over keen on auto box, and an X3 is not really my cup of tea. So i decided to try Audi for a change. Its not a bad car but to be honest it is quite boring to drive compared to all the BM's i have owned in the past, E36 325 coupe, E46 328ci, Z4 coupe and the X5.
The quattro system is very good in all the snow that we have had of late , but the car feels cheaper than compared to BMW's offerings. I suppose it was a bit less money than the same spec car from BMW but boy can you tell!!!
The moral of the story is...If you love something ,stick with it...
Anyone else bought a different car for a change and wished they had just stuck with what they had got???

I bought a '98 Volvo V70R AWD about 2 1/2 years ago thinking it would be kind of a mini RS4. My God what a mistake.
Sure it was comfortable, quite fast in a straight line but honestly, that was it.
It was thirsty, nose heavy, rolled really badly in the corners and was expensive to maintain for no reason.
It was OK in the wet, you could drive just the same in the heavy rain as you did on a sunny day without fear of aquaplaning so I guess it had one merit but the rest of my memories are of total boredom.
Got rid of that and went back to an M car and have never looked back. Problem is now what to get next come the time.

The problem now with cars with standard engines and exhaust systems is that they are barely audible, and this gives them a dull boring drive experience.
At least a BM with a straight six has a bit of engine roar to enjoy.
My first BM was a E36 325i coupe and this sounded better than many of the later BM's i have owned, even though it was a standard exhaust. It was even better in the sound deptartment than the 3.0 si coupe that i had!!!
Why do they mute the beautiful exxhaust note on newer cars??

done exactly the same in 2004, wanting to get a newer car, had an e46 328i, we wanted a 330i red with sat nav, anyway looked for ages, not 1 anywhere, and couldnt afford new, so decided to look around, gave ford and vauxhall etc a missRecently i have been trying to choose what car to buy after selling my 54 plate 3.0d X5. went to look at mazda mps, alfa 147 gta and audi a4, cut a long story short we bought a a4 sline 1.8tq and it was the most boring drive ever, put up with it for 3 years and thought right, back to bmw and get a proper one so ended up with a M3

Yes my Elise! Had a z3m since & currently a 328ci but nothing compares to my little Lotus.
The Z3M must have been very close though????
Bought a Mercedes CLK thinking it'd be the mutt's nutts quality wise. It wasn't. Rubbish paint, body started rusting at 2.5 yrs old, trim flakey and odd electrical errors. Sold it back to MB after a year, bitterly dissapointed.
Shame as it was probably the most comfortable car I've owned.

I have only owned the A4 for 5 weeks but already thinking of changing it for X5 4.8is . Its not even a supposedly boring car i got. It's the 2.0TFSI quattro SE with 220bhp. The turbo lag is noticable too.
Why did you choose an SE over the S-line/sports version? Its mainly the engine thats dissappointing.
