Back in a proper car at last.Just brought a 1999 996 C2 (GT3 kit, wheels etc) to replace my Focus ST170 which was brought brand new 7 months ago as replacement for my horrendously unreliable 1999 Cerbera Speed Six. Hoping for some high speed but trouble free motoring now!!
Anyone else had a similar journey into Porsche ownership, and are they as trouble free as I am told??

I went from TVR to Porsche (Gt3 kit too ;p )

Nice transition, from the Raw, extreme TVR, to the reliable, smooth sublime Porsche.

both gorgeous in their own seperate ways....

I did miss the 'edge' the TVR gave, but then I noticed how i taking my fav roads twice as fast, and without even trying.

I will defo buy another Porsche in the future (still 'almost' buying a TT Cab... but those 360's are v.tempting) ... I cant see myself owning a TVR again (unless they rekindle their love affair with the V8)

I hope oneday, to follow in rich1231's footsteps, and own a Pony and a Pork.... maybe then, I will get a V8 TVR for 'fun' again

How you finding the Porsche over the TVR....

I mistakenly underated the Porsche at first, was somewhat underwhelmed by it, but as 456 said once, its defo a case of, The more you drive it, the more you appreciate just how stunning it is...

You start off being underwhelmed, and you end up being smitten.

Congrats

Underwhelmed is exactly the right phrase (probably more than you with your car Jamie... mine is a 'pretend' GT3 after all). It is VERY sublime, hard to believe its a 170+mph, 5 secs to sixty supercar. The Cerbera felt SOOOO fast in comparison. However even on my first drive back in torrential rain I noticed how I could plant my foot to the floor at any time and the Porsche just squats and launches itself. Anything but bone dry roads and the TVR went sidewards.BIG style!

Oh, and the Porker has'nt broke yet.

You could say I have the best of both worlds, I have an '81 SC 911 and a 350i TVR. They both have there good and bad points, but one of them always fits the bill.

You are not serious about a 996TT cab are you>???

BTW take your 911 on a track day. Youll be surprised how much quicker a standard 996 is than most TVRs around a wet or dry circuit.

Why not? OK, it's a bit big-bummed and perhaps the image is a bit footballers wives, but it's not a bad all-rounder! If you JUST HAD to have a convertible and use it every day in all weathers...you could do worse than a 996 Turbo Cab.
All the slightly negative press it has received recently in Car and Evo etc is a bit unfair. Top down motoring is rather nice. May as well do it with 420 BHP if you're going to do it at all.
Having said all that, I'm after a 996 Turbo next and it will have a tin roof.

No you're probably right, if you want a drop top perfomance car, its probably one of the best.

Looks wise, I dont think any 911 cab is a patch on the hard top. the lines just dont look right.

Was never a fan of the lines or idea of a 911 Cab....

Until I had one, then I loved it....

All the + points of a 911, but with Top down motoring, and the most gorgeous roof mechanism ever.

I even think in some colors, it looks BETTER than the Tin top, with root up...

It didnt handle QUITE as good as my tin top, but you would be hard pushed to find it was coming anywhere near close to impacting your driving on the road.

If you ever get the chance, try a 996 Cab... it truly is leagues above the 993 Cab, and by no means is it any less a 911 for 99% of the time.

an X50 TT Cab... well... short of a 360 Spyder, I think it would be my ideal car.

I think with the right (read GT2) aerokit, and possibly savagnah interior.... it would look devine.

Few more pix on my site.

I kind of like the idea of a 996 cab, but the jump in performace up from my Boxster S would not be big enough for my liking. That's why I'm thinking Turbo next. There is no way I could afford a Turbo cab in the near future though....Turbo tin tops will be down to 50+ grand when I am ready to buy in 18-24 months. The cab version will be much more expensive on the used market for a long time yet.

Jamie,

LOL!!!!!

Mate, should you buy that thing, I will not be offering to buy it off you when you have finished with it!

Gotta be a black interior.

Have you ordered it?

hehe no, still considering rolling my gt3 order onto it, but still 'taking stock of life' atm, want to get a new house, expanding the business blah blah.

Main reason is that I just dont drive anywhere atm, I am having to conciously drive the car every fortnight, just to give it a run. Once I move back out of docklands, a new motor will come

I have yet to experience ruffled leather, mine was fitted with the Sports Seats... leather was tighter than a nuns cooch.

UPDATE!

Started car this morning to put it outside for dealer to collect, knocking like a good 'un still.

Dealer rang 10 mins ago.....can't hear anything amiss at all!!!!!!!!

They suggested it was the exhaust knocking on the body.....I think not! I blew my race bike to bits last year - well versed in terminal noises from highly strung engines!

Still I'll be well pleased if she's OK. It'll back to business as usual baiting Bennno about his Porker with a bit of luck!
