Had my new car for 2 weeks. Managed to get 600 miles done by visiting friends and family. Now I am getting frustrated.

Cant fault the car - does everything very well. But I am not allowed to give it any beans until the 1200 mile service. Why dont they bench test the motor so it can be used out of the box?

they haven't got the time or money to clock up 1200 miles on a car when a buyer will be doing that anyway

Just strap the motor to a bench and turn it on for a day!

The chassis, wheels and 95% of the rest of the car dont need 1200 miles on them. Its only the engine.

Even if the engine were to be super efficient on the bench, and manage the equivilent of 60mpg for arguements sake, that is still a massive waste of petrol to burn for every car when the first owner will be doing that mileage anyway.

I dont think i've ever owned a car that hasn't had somekind of reccomended running in period. Whats the problem!

Go and visit somemore friends and family and then you will be at the magical 1200.

Actually, running in your own csr is a pleasurable experience in the fact you KNOW it hasnt been ragged.

Strangest post of 2010.

I don't think it's just the engine. I think the diff is fitted with a special thick oil or something like that which wants changing at 1200 miles for the type of oil it will then use going forward

I have to agree with Rags on this one, bit of a strange post. If you can't wait 1200 miles to put your foot down, then i'm not sure what that says about you, especially when it seems you are racking up this miles pretty quickly.

Enjoy the running in period, get to know the car a bit better and it's great knowing that then engine has never been driven hard before. You have also just come from 2 4WD cars by the looks of it, so explore the handling a bit, which can be done without revving the nuts off it.

ps. Worst 'i've just bought a new M3' post ever wink

I wasn't sure if i would fit in with the M3 guys. Better go back to Porsches then! - which don't have a run in. Neither did the audi rs4 I just sold. But not to worry, sometimes people just don't like you ali. Live with it....

I'm off to Pret a manger!

Don't worry mate, I remember when you got your RS4 B7, I got mine in 2007 march the last of them, you like me now have the M3 V8, Mine is M-DCT with EDC and I just got my 1200 mile service done friday, still taking it easy though( under 6.5K RPM) till two thousand miles, I don't find the need to thrash it till it's well run in.

I dont think I explained myself properly to all. So apologies for that. I tried to put forward a question rather than an opinion.

The point I was trying to make was that it feels like an unnecessary situation which has the corollary benefit to the dealer of a service soon after purchase.

I understand why it is done, but I dont get why I have to do it. Its not that much of an inconvenience, but it seems a little annoying, like having to pay extra for floor matts on a new £112,000 porsche turbo I was looking at. (Fabulous machine by the way.)

Does this thought honestly seem to most lame? There are other cars that have similar run ins, Nissan GTR for example, but Nissan include this service in the price and dont tell you not to go over 106mph or 5,500 rpm for 1200 miles. And as a further point, the run in lasts to 3600 miles where you are advised not to use full acceleration for long periods or exceed 136mph - it was on the sticker on the screen when I drove out of the showroom. 3600 miles is half a year of motoring to me.

Is the run in service not free (or already accounted for in the price of the car). I'm sure it was for the E46 M3, assumed it was for the new model but may be wrong.
