Driving along the A24 on a chilly Saturday at the weekend, something caught my eye. Looked up and there was a WW1 vintage biplane flying above it. Looked fantastic, but an open cockpit in this weather must have got the thermal underwear working hard smile

I doubt it was WW1 vintage.

Think I saw the pilot going to the airfield, in his soft top Masda, roof off, scarf on. Brrrrrrr.

I suppose it could have been a reproduction. It certainly wasn't a modern design and was flying VERY slowly. In fact, I was surprised it was flying at all the speed it was travelling. Unfortunately I was looking up directly into the sun so couldn't see any markings other than it looked to be brown in colour, but that doesn't help much.

The onlu genuine WW1 era aircraft flying in the UK are a handfull operated by the Shuttleworth Trust at Old Warden. They very rarely fly outside the confines of their airfield.

There are lots of replicas knocking about though.

And, of course, there are lots of later generation bi-planes around - such as De Havilland Moths, Tiger Moths, Stearmans etc.
