Is there anything else other than RockBox?
I've had that on my 30gb Video iPod for a few weeks, and it's fine, but a little slow at responding when you first start listening and when skipping tracks... (Not a major issue tbh! I think it's due to it making a playlist out of all my tracks which is taking up all the processing power.)
It's 'better' than the Apple firmware, because for a start it doesn't cut off the end of half my songs!!
But is there anything else I can try? I've found iPodWizzard, but it seems to be quite old, and there are a few threads on their forums referring to bricking (which requires opening up the iPod and dis/reconnecting the battery to sort), which is putting me off...
Any suggestions?

I take it you bought the iPod 2nd hand as they don't make that model any more.What was on the iPod when you got it? Has it got the latest firmware on it? How have you (ripped and) added your tracks?
The only benefit I can see for using alternatives to the built in firmware is the ability to play alternative file formats.

Doesn't do it with every mp3, it can do it on any particular track, might do it once, replay the song and it wont do it this time...I've never had that happen on any of my ipods (mini, classic and photo) over the years.

I've Google'd several times and there are a few people with the same issues...
It mp3 are fine when listened to in iTunes or Foobar...

Never tried anything else apart from RockBox, took a while to get used to but I wouldn't go back now. Shame you didn't get on with it but it's not for everyone.
Are you playing tracks through the database or through file view? Using 'database' like the old Apple firmware, it has to search the hard drive, find all the files corresponding to each album and queue them up. Using file view you just play the files in the filename order, using a filesystem like Music/<Album Artist>/<Album>/Track# - Title.mp3 on both the PC and the ipod makes things simpler (for the way I use it anyway)

Deleting files on the go - like those annoying intro tracks and silence tracks at the end of albums,
Getting rid of itunes - drag & drop straight from Windows (or Apple/ Linux) just like a memory stick on any computer,
Better sound qaulity and far more fine-tuning options - stereo width, proper equaliser, bass cutoffs etc,
More customisable - display exatly what you want on the screen,
Mixing and crossfading - useful for doing a works disco with track volume levelling
Oodles more plugins, and for free, not paying through the nose for everything through the Apple appstore, plus develop your own apps

It's not that I don't get on with it, I just wondered if there was anything else similar that I could have a play with...
I use the file menu to play my tracks, but have it set to 'Shuffle' rather than just playing them in alphabetical order...
All my mp3s are in one folder, i'm using iTunes Agent http://ita.sourceforge.net/ to sync with the PC (very good, much better than just dragging & dropping).

Same here, bodged firmwares onto the phone to run Windows Mobile 6.5 despite the manufacturer refusing to support it. Might give Android a go and see what that's all about.
It always goes well with these devices ... until one step too far and you bu99er it all up and have to format & reinstall. Go for it with the PS3, you can always reinstall the original firmware (I hope) ... what could possibly go wrong?

Linux is installed alongside the PS3's firmware as a dual boot... but once it's on there you can't remove the bootloader (so I read a while back), but I need to investigate a bit more first...
Or buy a 2nd PS3...
