Does anyone have experience with trading names?
I'm a little confused.
We're currently a limited company, but the business name was unsuitable for our new online venture, so we decided it would be best to trade under a different name.
Currently I have just put in the footer of the website:
ourwebaddress.com is a trading name of "existing company name Ltd."
Is this sufficient?
Or do we need to register it somewhere, I have come across the "national business register"
http://www.start.biz/home.htm
Should we register our trading name with them? Never had to deal with trading names before so it's all a little confusing.

There is no legal requirement in the UK to register business names.

You can have a limited company called XYZ Ltd but have it trade under the name "ABC Window Cleaners" or whatever.

If another trader or trading entity doesn't like you using the trading name you have chosen, they can apply through the courts to stop you using that particular name.

For instance, it would be unwise to set up a limited company and decide to use a trade name such as "Sainsbury's".

Eric, is it legal to have a legal entity called "abc limited" and then trade as "def limited"?

(i.e. "def limited is a trading name of abc limited". This seems a bit fishy as it could be misleading as to what the legal entity is called.)

No.

You can not use "limited" in a a "trade name".

A limited company is a legal entity in its own right and to use the term "limited", you must register a limited company with that name at Companies House. If another limited company with the same or a very similar name is already registered at Companies House, Companies House will not allow you to register your company using that name.

Thanks, so I assume people like the national business register are just allowing you to unofficially register your intent to trade under a said name?
And if someone does decide they don't like you training under that name they'll stick up for you?

I was originally going to trade under stairsuk.com but realised this might be a bad idea as someone is already registered as trading as stairsuk?

Consequently I now have tkstairs.com
Would you say it's worth registering with the national business register?
Also if I do, would i register as tkstairs or tkstairs.com or would i need to register both separately?

It strikes me as another way of getting £82 per annum out of punters, but for what?

Neither have I, I just followed the link in one of the posts above, looks very professional but my advice would be "stay well away", I cannot see what benefit you would derive from giving them £82 per year.

Seem to just catch people of guard when starting new ventures, amount of people running companies that don't have a grasp of the basics.

I'm not saying they are con merchants at all they just offer a service that you can easily do yourself/or not needed

Indeed. I have to say I'm wary of any establishment which uses a ".biz" URL.
