"mechanic" wants to look under my cam cover?

Tuscan is up for sale because Mrs Chewitt is up t'duff ...

so several emails (damn) and 2 people to call back (in case they be nutters or tyre kickers) 1 "wanna swap for a subaru!!!

one very keen chap wants to send his mechanic to have a look over the car - no probs BUT he wants to look under the cam cover.

Am I being mardy but I don't know this guy from adam ....... and I am uneasy about him taking the cam cover off (scuttle panel etc etc etc)

any views on this welcome

Where do you get your car serviced? Why not get "mechanic" to talk to them before stripping your car down!?

Well mine is up for sale too and, although I would be happy for it to go to one of the main TVR specialists, even an RAC/AA at a pinch (although I would recommend that a specialist would be better from buyer's viewpoint) , I think "you can look but you can't touch" is as good a starting point as any.

It is a reasonable request, I wish I had done it. The solution is to let them look at the car and then ask if they like the car enough to buy it at your agreed price. Get deposit. If they agree but the only show-stopper is the view under the cam cover then they should pay to have your local man remove it, let them look and then it gets sealed back up again. It should take less than one hour and so about £50. Not a bad price to pay for their piece of mind. Also at that point the negotiation may start up again. As long as the condition is pre set in the minds of all people then fine. I am thinking something along the lines of, expect to see some wear and that the TVR specialist may comment "there is wear but nothing that will affect the engine for many thousand miles - there is plenty of opportunity for adjustment re shimming."

i've been looking at tuscan's myself recently and was wondering where people stood on removing the main bonnet for possible buyers to inspect the engine?

Softtop is wright wish i had the cam cover off b4 i got my old Tusacan had to take it to TVR Power it cost me 5.5k to put wright and there was no come back from the guy who sold it me. i been there so get that dam cam off................ ok bit over the top but it cost me so mutch to put wright and im looking for another TVR know. The old Tuscan is in the big scrapyard in the sky.......

yes let the buyer ask your mechanic that has your car serviced mate..............

Hi,
its me who is interested in the car.
The reason to look under the camcover, is to check if the engine had a rebuild or not.
You all know that a 2001 car whithout a rebuild is a risk. So if you have a garage or mechanic around you trust lets go there. I will pay this guy for opening and closing the camcover.

Please understand me, i dont want to buy a car with a risk of a soon engin damage.

There is no reason why any seller should have a problem doing this.
I'd expect to have to use a dealer for anything more detailed.

If I could not have taken the bonnet off i would have walked away! When i looked at mine I asked if he had the tools to take it off or should i bring my own. (Not a problem now as i did the flipping bonnet mod)

I can understand not wanting to take the cam cover off but it depends how much you want the sale. I can unerstand the conerns and TBH I would like to do the same if i buy another. If the guy is willing to pay for a specialist to do it then you have nothing to loose.

If i was selling mine and the person wanted to look under the cover it would have been off in 2 mins. Its not a big job and the scuttle panal can stay in place, its just resealing the cover.

I bought a 2001 Tuscan S with no rebuild in May 09, had it checked by specialists but not in as much detail as you want. It turned out fine so far, and the mechanic that serviced it gave it a clean bill of health..

I think its not an unreasonable request to have it checked, if you are willing to pay the cost.

My first Tuscan lasted 34 miles before the engine blew. Inspect it ? I sent the Wife.

the car was only service 100 miles ago - full 12K service by Mr PPC. I got married and spent most of the nice weather in India. It lived in the garage.
There was no offer from above man to take it to my man........until now - on a forum! why didn't you just email????

i can't find it un-reasonable but it's up to you who you will open the engine up
you can always agree on a garage in your neighborhood
the price to pay is for the buyer
the first thing i did when i had the car is taking the cam cover off (luckily everything was like stated by his garage (tvr centre) but with cars this sensible you should do it before buying

Hi Craig,
i did email you (hope you got it even like the other mails) with the info that Uwe (the mechanic from the German TVR forum) will only have a look and dont open anything. I even agree to go to a garage of your choice and would even pay the work. Uwe is in UK on Thursday so if you give me the requested contact informations he will come around 14:00 - 15:00 a clock.
If you dont like, it´s even ok for me.
