Evening all,

getting a real headache over this!! currently got a sagaris and a RR and looking to chop them both in and get one car again. So i'm thinking the best solution is the M5... I've heard a few rumours about trouble with the M5's? can anyone on clear this up or alay my fears? and may be give me a few pointers to look out for as this would be my first BMW. Also does can you give me an idea of service costs once they've had it in and picked at it. Thanks

Mike

I would definitely think current given the cars you are chopping in. There are no more problems with the E60 M5 than any other second hand car. Make sure you buy from BMW AUC with their warranty otherwise you are open to some pretty big bills should anything go wrong. Personally I would never run an M car without manufacturer based warranty: I`ve had mine 5 months and I reckon BMW has spent about £6000 (retail) on various fixes. Maintenance isn`t as bad as you think although you`ll have to stick to main dealer on the AUC programme. I would figure in about £1000 a year for servicing, tyres and other bits and pieces, depending on your mileage.
Remember the E60 will take a pretty large hit, as it has done already when the F10 M5 is released. Bear in mind this could still be upto 18 months away. Enjoy it though, people worry far too much about depreciation. Depreciation matters a whole lot more if you are driving a Euro-Grot box and not having any fun.

I don't think that you will find the luxury of the M5 is able to compete with your Rolls Royce wink

Thanks for the help, yes it is a current one I'm looking at. Sounds like you've had a bit of work done if BMW have spent 6k ish on it. As you say could happen on any used car. Can I ask what work was done just so I can either ask the question or keep an eye out when I'm looking at them, thanks again,
Mike

Mine isn`t an M5, it`s a Z4MC but the bills will be larger on an M5. I`ve had cams, shims, vanos actuators, cam pos. sensor, ecu reset, 2 lambda sensors and now they have taken the whole engine to pieces, top and bottom because they think there is an underlying problem. This is in only 4 months!! At the moment I am currently taking the legal position of giving them every available opportunity to put it right under warranty (it`s now been with dealer for 12 days). After that I shall let loose the dog of war (my solicitor) who is more akin to a pitbull terrier than a man. Last case he took on for a colleague of mine resulted in a brand new Disco after putting 15,000mls and one year on the previous faulty one. Fingers crossed it won`t come to that.

yikes

Jay-sus!

Is this a Z4MC that you have owned from new, or a used vehicle?

What was the symtoms when the car started to play up, and you returned it to them to begin diagnosis clutching at straws?

Sorry long post:

I bought it end Sep 09 with 25,000 on the clock, EML light was on so handed it straight back to supplying dealer who after about 10 days handed it back after me having 3 different courtesy cars, the last one being delivered to my office 1 hr before they phoned me to say the car was ready. Problem seemed to be solved after new cams, cap pos. sensor, vanos actuators were fitted. Next month lambda went, fixed. 2 weeks later Lambda went again, was told it was OK to drive but New Years Eve car repeatedly went to limp home on the journey to see family. This was then fixed by dealer along with checking all fluid levels.
Just after the thaw went back to car and noticed a very slight ticking/tapping noise from engine, just put it down to it being stood for so long. Drove to airport, left it there for three days and on my return it was tapping like Brucey on steroids. Drove it straight to my local dealer whose opinion was not to drive it any further.
They have done a couple of shims which didn`t solve the problem. Their master technician of 25 years`s opinion was just to have a new engine fitted under warranty but BMW don`t operate like this. He has said there is an underlying serious problem that caused the cam wear in the first instance and is causing the tapping now. SOOoooo he is now stripping the whole top and bottom end out and still hasn`t found the problem. As stated it`s been with them 12 days now and no courtesy car was forthcoming so I was advised to phone BMW customer services who were about as helpful as a stomach ulcer. Have now got back in touch with the supplying dealer, who I might add are the only people to have actually apologised over this debacle. There is now a 320i coupe sat outside as a courtesy car.
Seriously, I`m giving them another week to solve this and PROVE that it`s a long term fix or it`s money back time with an ex gratia payment demand for inconvenience caused and time spent.

I`ll then head back to Audi with my tail between my legs and a cheque for an RS4!

I had a lemon M5 too. bought it used 2006, 45k miles mind. BMW warranty (thank fk)
To cut a long story short: 4 months of wonership, a total of one month in the workshop, around 10k spent by BMW. First owner was an F1 team. that could also explain it. Anyway with a proper warranty you are pretty much covered regardless, as long as you dont mind the hassle.

I went from a TVR to M5 and love it. I get to use it more, and I prefer it, it seems more modern and comfortable. I'm getting old.

Just heard from dealer, was an oil starvation problem to the head, apparently caused by swarf in an oil pathway. Anyway, they are now completely stripping down the engine to every nut and bolt. If they find 2 other worn components it will be a new engine, at the very least it will be a new top end. Only thing is they reckon it`s going to be at least another 2 weeks!! I picked car up end Sep, took it into them 22nd Jan, so if it is 2 weeks, that will be a total 6 weeks with dealer!! Crazyyyy

Just heard from BMW, it will indeed be a brand new engine. Coming in from Germany this week so should have car back mid to end of next week (fingers crossed). What does a new engine entail, does it come dressed or just block, head and internals?
