My new (to me) 2001 Volvo V40 T4 Sport Lux Auto has a problem, which the garage seems unable to diagnose or fix. They want it to get worse first!

I'm hoping someone here might recognise the symptoms, which are:

When I am driving very slowly (<10 mph) without my foot on the accelerator I hear a rhythmic clunking sound coming from the engine bay, front-drivers side. It is in time with the wheel speed, but faster. If I go faster, or keep speed constant but with gently power it stops.

I am told alignment, tyres (new), breaks etc have all been checked.

Any ideas ???

Sorry to hear about the problems you're experiencing with your T4 - the top O/S/F hydraulic engine mount is prone to failure on these models and is one of the main causes for "clunking" noises coming from the engine bay on the driver's side. Whilst Volvo developed a modified part to help curb further problems, should that mount be found to be the cause of the issue, my advice would be to replace it with the top engine mount from a pre-01 (i.e.model year 1998-2000, or Phase 1) T4 - they're far more robust and rarely fail.

I have a similar issue with my S40 T4. I've been to a few garages who've ramped it and had a look but none find anything.

Did you get this resolved?

Yes, and no!

I wanted it fixed by the garage I bought the car from, as that was only a couple of months ago and they are supposed to be well known specialists.

Unfortunately they were unable to find the cause of the problem, suggesting it was possibly the drivers side drive shaft. Other possibilities were the engine mount as suggested above. Anyway, they want the issue to get worse so they can diagnose it better, which I am not too keen on!

So, I've been driving the car and it hasn't got any worse - until yesterday when it suddenly fixed itself!! Yes, both sound and vibration have gone!

Do Volvo's normally fix themselves???!
