With this....

http://www.pistonheads.com/sales/1459651.htm

First black on i've seen...although it's only a pic, the exterior and interior both look simply superb despite always vowing to never get a black car....

Few questions...

1) What things should I look for on such an early 3R?

2) I see so much about the 6 speed box being essential, this guy seems to oversell the 5-speed...thoughts?

3) Is it worth spending the extra 3k ish on a 3R over a 3, 5/6k over a standard GTO.

4) After a quick mail with the owner, the car has broken down twice in the past year...I thought that these cars were far more realiable than say...the much put down TVR...is this a rarity!? I intend to take the nob on pan-european tours, so this kinda record (in 4k miles) isn't exactly confidence filling.

Input appreciated.

Did he say with what? Actually stopping and getting you stuck somewhere is really rare.

Yep....first was clutch related...new slave required.

Second time was something to do with the fuel pump...new pump and wiring loom was required.

Firstly, at least the guy's being honest if on the breakdowns.Secondly the 2 Nobles I've had much much more reliable than any of the 4 TVRs I owned. My present one had also been more reliable then the wifes previous CLS and current Discovery 3.That's not to say all is perfect and well, and some have been unlucky, but do the homework have a look at a few and don't jump straight in.

That's a bit of a bonus in some ways, as that's a good upgrade.

Exactly, hence I think that aswell as a smashing bit of kit, it will also bode well as an investment...

I can't imagine 5 years of ownership with decrease the value much more...if at all providing it's well looked after and doesn't wind up with 100k miles on it.

I'm 6ft...i hear a lot about the footwell and pedals being offset to the left....european road trips must take it's toll on the comfort side!?

+10.
Approx 1700miles per yearyikes, and I guess most of those were to and fro the service centre.
I can just about forgive someone for building an extension, but not driving your Noble is close to an indictable offence hehe.

I'm 6'3, a very late 2005 3R may have the improved footwell/trans tunnel room etc that they put on the M400. Having had both I find the latter much more comfortable, as did an acquaintance who has just offered mega money for mine after looking at a couple though I was doing him a favour showing him it and I had no intention of selling!

Whilst I do appreciate the responses, we seem to be going slightly away from the original post...

I kinda had 4 questions, only 1 appears to have been answered...(5 speed boxes go BOOM right).

I was replying about your question above on the offset pedals. If you consider that off topic and your unhappy with only getting one answer out of 4 questions in 2 hours use the search function.

I belive its mainly the diff thats the weak point and I think I remember that this guy had the LSD fitted. If I was in the market for another one then the 6spd LSD is what I would wait for and with track day sump. If I was also in no rush then I would try and hold out for one that has had the fuel pump/wiring and exhaust upgrade.

Your stripes are about as subtle as Martin's colour scheme. wink They do look good in black, I believe Inflict also has a black one.

He wasn't looking at exporting it to Cyprus was he? biggrin

As to the OP's questions, it sounds like the owner has been upfront with any issues and has done some of the important mods. It might be worth asking about the intercooler and exhaust too. As SJC says, the search function should bring up similar threads of what to look for. As for being an investment, I agree I don't think you'll lose much (if any) money if you look after it, but it's not the main reason you should be buying a Noble. smile
