What is it about W124 estates?
Discussion
I don't need an estate, I don't have any use whatsoever for the space it offers, but I really like W124 estates for some reason and have done for years.
Look at this beautiful (IMO) E320, if I needed another car I'd buy it in a heartbeat - and what a great advert too (although cheaper cars are available if you look, not always with the 320 lump though)

Thoughts? Am I mad or do you agree that this is still a rather desirable and classy car?

I've come close to buying one of these before on the basis that its a non-depreciating large estate car ideal for carting the family and dog around at weekends leaving me to run a slightly more entertaining car during the week.
I've never quite been brave enough though and have been put off by a couple of tatty examples I see regularly around where i live. On the other hand that red one does look very nice....

I've always loved these, though apparently the W123 is better built (though rusts)

Mate has a W124 estate...auto. I think its a 220....metallic sky blue with matching cloth interior, self closing tailgate, he bought it when he needed something cheap and practical, was out of work...got this, and even though it had big mileage it was SO clean, sailed through its MOT and it never let him down since...
He's a pilot now....got some nice cars too...but he simply won't let the Merc go.

Handsome car.
They seem to be going for more than the subsequent e-class estates, whatever they're called....
That's because the 210s that replaced them are absolute rust buckets, and not built anywhere near as well. That 124 looks lovely, not cheap though! They seem to be going for more than the subsequent e-class estates, whatever they're called....
Beautiful car and I'd own it in a heartbeat, it'd fit my needs perfectly. But not at £6k. Yes, it's incredibly well made, yes, it's timelessly cool, BUT it is still 15 years old, with all that entails in terms of passive and active safety (or relative lack thereof), increased maintenance (no matter what anyone says) and whatever else.
I'm not suggesting it should be a £1k bargain bucket just because of its age, I just think somewhere in the £3-4k region would be more appropriate. But what do I know, maybe that's the going rate for a minter these days.

That sounds like my ex gf's dad, he's had his w124 (same spec as above) for years and years and won't let it go despite being able to afford a new E class estate.Mate has a W124 estate...auto. Odd to think that a leather clad estate with a 3.2 litre 'six' would no doubt come fully equipped these days.
However it's interesting to note (to me at least) that despite all the glass on this car and the leather interior the original buyer opted not to have air con or climate. A decision that was far from unusual at that time in fact (I was selling Mercs during this era), despite your average 'super mini' driver expecting it as standard today.

Last of the well built Benz
A bit of a classless car, and hence why it appeals to so many people.
FWIW, lovely ad, but at no point is the mileage mentioned or apparent in the photos. 14 stamps would appear to indicate at least 126k though.
I dont doubt the cars provenance or condition in the slightest, but it is rather expensive - by about 3k I reckon!
