That's about it. Thinking of getting an Xbox 360, only 5 years after everyone else. But was wondering if it was better to get one of the £25-£30 ones from ebay with the RROD andget it fixed, or just get one out the paper.

Tesco were selling the old 20GB model (white model with hard drive) brand new for £80 if you can find it. see here....

Failing that, you can buy a 120GB elite console (black) for £169.99 here.

It's about £250 quid to stop it happening again.

You do get a free PS3 into the bargain however....

The quoted price for mine about 3 months ago was £82 - luckily they did it for free as it was only a couple of months outside the 3 year warranty - they never asked for receipts or anything either so might be worth being cheeky and trying for a free fix!

Beware of RROD on Ebay, they may have that as a listed fault, then when you fix it they could also be banned from xbox live.

I bought a fixing kit off ebay and followed some instructions helped by a couple of youtube videos.

It all worked well for a couple of months and then the same problem occured. I think this may have been because of the cheap gel used for the heatsink, I should have bought some better quality stuff looking back.

The cost wasn't much though. £5ish for a kit, plus lots of cursing and an hour or so.

Hope this helps!

If you are fairly handy then the bits to do the repair yourself can be obtained for about a fiver or so. There's no guarantees it will however or that if it does how long it will last. ebay can be a minefield as the cheap RRoD ones are often incomplete, could be banned or whatever. Personally I'd just buy a new one and get warranty etc.

If you really are keen to give it a go then you could probably buy my old one off me.

I went for the X-Clamp fix from ebay, basically swapping the x-shaped clamps out for regular bolts and washers, as mentioned above, it worked for another month or two, then went pop, so I got an elite.

The fixing kits on ebay are a bodge. The problem is actually the soldering on the processors, all the clamp kits are doing is forcing the chip back onto the circuit board (therefore making a bad connection good again for a while). The correct way is to remove the chips, clean them up (solder side) re tin and reball then solder back properly. To do this properly requires proper heat guns as the chips dont use through pins so a regular soldering iron wont work. The only fix i found on youtube that is close to what needs to be done was a guy who attempted to reflow the chips by covering the surronding areas with tinfoil for heat protection then using a hot air paint stripper to heat up the underside of the chips. The problem with that is he is only reflowing the solder that is there, new solder would be much better.

Some attemps i found on there would just kill your xbox completely like one guy who removed the heatsinks and powered it up (wich is bad enough) then proceeded to heat up the chips with a paint stripper!!! Ultimate madness!
