REAL world Mk6 GTI mpg figures....

hiya all.....having now more or less decided on a mk6 GTI later this year I would be interested to find out if the nigh on 40mpg "official" figures are close to the mark.....I KNOW that driving style and type of use will affect, but having owned the previous mk5, was always a little disappointed with the overall mpg....using super-unleaded i NEVER got near the quoted 35ish mpg. I know this latest model is cleaner and cheaper to tax(CO2 of 179 i believe),but does that represent any REAL improvement in the fuel consumption.....Thanks for any info you can provide.....

Well the type of driver and roads will have a strong factor. I can get 40mpg on a day's run from our MKV GTi manual quite easily by gentle driving in mixed conditions. Drops to 32 at worse, 33-35 at 85-90mph on the motorway. The newer engine is supposed to be a smidge better so IMO 40mpg is very attainable. But it might not be by you on your roads.

Why not work out the percentage improvement according to VW then add it to your MKV results?

VW driver magazine got an overall 35mpg and an incredible 47mpg in their economical driving test.

Also, over on http://www.golfgtiforum.co.uk/index.php?board=75.0 they 'reckon' it's possible with 95RON with better results on 98RON (however no formal technical knowledge is published).

Yes, to be precise, we got 35.2 mpg overall average and 47.3 mpg on our 'economical driving' run, with the 6-speed manual Mk 6 GTI

Mk 6 GTI DSG got 32.5 overall and 45.4 economical driving

Bear in mind that the overall average figs are proper brim-to-brim records not just MFA figs, and includes the full-bore performance tests (as well as the eco drive) We usually clock up at least 1000 miles during our 7-day test period, including a wide variety of driving styles and conditions / routes etc so – while not absolutely scientifically definitive – it is pretty typical of what the average driver will expect in the real world.

( We also use high quality fuel eg Shell V-Power or BP Ultimate in the high-performance cars we test, again typical of what a 'proper' driver would use – expect 2-3 mpg less on 95 RON premium unleaded )

I did 6000 miles in my DSG and avged about 32mpg over the duration, it was mostly motorway miles & I enjoyed every mile i put on it.

So all these years on, what MPG are you getting from your mk6 gti’s? Even better, how many miles do you typically get out of a tank?

Thinking of changing out the mk6 2.0 GT TDi which gets a steady 550 miles out of a £60 tank. No matter how I drive it.

Best I’ve seen is 440 miles to the tank. However, my mk6 GTi is running a stage 2 tune running about 275 bhp. My normal driving is mainly town based and I’m seeing about 320-340 to the tank. I’ve only ever used Tesco Momentum in 4 1/2 years of owning the car. I’m averaging around 33-35 mpg.

So it’s £65 to fill it, but that’s at Costco, with their fancy ‘ish’ fuel and cheapest in town prices. Not the same size fuel tank used over the models?

32-38mpg average on my Mk2.5 Skoda Octava vRS. Getting 360-ish miles to a tank (when the light comes on), again on average.

Eight year later after making my post above(!) I can report:

Best tank 464 with 0.5l left

17" wheels with low rolling resistance tyres (GY F1-AS3) and the BM underbody tray, manual.

In winter it drops to 36-ish

Obviously very little town driving!

Relatively new Mk7 DSG PP Gti owner just checking the mpg so far.
On general touring round the Peak District ~70mls at legal speeds (no Mways) then the best I've managed to get so far is 37.1mpg in normal drive mode. So quite pleased with this. However, compare this to a quick trip to the supermarket and the local pub of about 12 miles where I got 18.9mpg!!! Quite a range but to be expected I guess with cold starts. Never really checked what really short journeys did before. Anyone else got any figures for comparison?

34mpg average in my mk6 gti over 50km miles. Run on 95 RON. Not that light with the right foot.

Had mine almost 2 months, mainly town driving with some dual carriageways. Drive sensibly most of the time and averaging 32.5mpg and full tank of V Power gives around 350 miles. Range drops quite dramatically if I start to give it some though. But all in all not too bad I think! I have had the pcv valve, spark plugs and fuel filter replaced definitely noticed a difference in engine running. Worth doing if anyones getting poor mpg.
