Mac Sys X - Mail and attachments ...

I am using Mac Mail ver 3.6 on my iBook (Sys 10.5.8). All has been well but I now notice that any email attachments sent from a PC are now not accessible. The error message for the attachment is a WinDat file and not able to be opened? I have tried attaching .jpg - .doc - .ppt - or Adobe .pdf.
I have installed the Adobe ver 9 reader on the Mac with no success. This problem seems to have appeared after some recent system updates. Any help would be appreciated

Thanks ... tried "rich Text" with no joy but it does work if you send an email in "plain text" with the attachment.
