On TV last night this program said if you should break something in a shop, AND a sign is displayed saying 'All breakages to be paid for' you only have to pay wholesale/cost price. While this makes sence, does the item(s) then belong to you at the lower price ?

haha, you're thinking deliberately mark, or very slightly damage an item, then pay for it at wholesale price!

I would imagine your criminal masterplan is easily scuppered by them offering you wholesale price for the damage or retail price to own the damaged item.

Not sure they could do that.... the point is to repay the actual loss to the shop (ie what they paid for it in the first place). So I would say that, in order to make sure that they do not make a further profit from the item (thereby lessening their loss and so they should have charged you less), removing it (maybe to your house) or total destruction of the item are the way to go.

I expect the plan is more likely to be scuppered by them saying "don't worry about it, we'll send it back".

I thought the programme was distinctly flawed in that the poor victims (especially the poor guy who bought an iPOd for £17.50) did exactly what they should have - but still ended up losing out. He knew his rights, but the shop manager took the iPod off him and wasn't having it - what could he then do??

Is that the "what are your rights show"? I dont buy any of it - they have filmed people on sunbeds/getting a massage...then hit them with poor service to see how they react. If i was filmed in that situation i'd want to know the law about filming without permision not how to get my money back on a sunbed.

Set up, the whole thing.
