is everyone still on furnace levels of heat coming out of the central heating?

I had a look at the timer on the heating this morning whilst blearily looking round the kitchen for food that could be deemed as breakfast... then spotted the lovely OH has the heating set to on timer... for 16hours a day.... WTF!!

Now I know that the female of the species is a cold blooded animal but seriously I was a little taken aback by just how long its on for... Even though she is at home most of the time job hunting and keeping the sofa warm, but even then it shouldnt be on that much....

Is it just a fact of life that when the fairer sex is in your household you will have the heating on constantly? If it were me the heating would be off all the time and just on if really cold... Even then I would look at a jumper rather than turning it on.

But anyway the reason it was on timer and on for so much is to dry wet clothes (instead of just using the constant switch like a normal person), we comprimised and its on now for 2 hours in the morning and 1 at lunch and 2 more in the evening, which I think is more appropriate... but still too much.

Anyone else noticed this with their OH and the central heating control??

I will bet that its back to full blast when I get back tonight.

I hear some boffins have invented two fantastic items which may help you.

One is called a "tumble drier". It dries clothes without hanging them over radiators and making your house damp.

Second one is called a "jumper". It's made out of textile, and when worn on the body keeps it warm.

Um about an hour a day..... get home from work and pop the heating on. No one at our house in the day time so no point heating it.

They have invented something else called a "thermostat" as well, apparently having one makes the heating turn on when the house gets cold and the off again when it is warm enough.

Google it, they are really really clever...

I live on my own most of the time.
My heating comes on at 6:30 then off again at 7:45, I go to work at 8:00.
In the evening it comes on at 17:00 so the house is warm when I get home at 17:30. It goes off again at 01:00.
Temperature is set at 19 degrees C.

I have 2 female friends who stay with me occasionally. When either of them come over they immediately turn the heating up to 25 degrees and switch the timer to permanently on!

Thermostat? Never turn ours off or on...just tell it what temp to keep the house.

Though have to say...if i had to wear a jumper to keep warm indoors i'd consider myself a bit tight - i wear shorts/Tshirt round the house all times of year and like to still feel cosy.

As our house is 800 years old when the heating is off it's bloody cold and draughty, so it comes on at 06:30 to 10:30am then 16:30 until 23:30 if you're cold inbetween then you put more clothes on

Ours is a rathwer large, old draughty place with cast iron rads, and we work from home so it gets put on when I get up at about 8am and the stays on in the day at about 20 degrees. At tea time it goes up a degree, then gets turned off at about 10pm as it takes a few hours to fully cool down with the cast iron rads. Left ticking overnight at 16 or 17 degrees which usually means it is off unless the night is very cold when it just keeps the chill off.

Mind you I have a gas bill of £120 a month but the busines pays half.

My heating's been on permanently since the cold snap before xmas.

Reason being that if I set it to come on and off, it gets warm just as it's clicking off frown

So, I rely on the thermostat to keep it at a constant temperature in the hope that it's more efficient to have it on all the time heating a little rather than blazing trying to heat a cold house twice a day.

I long for a modern house that I can put the heating on and in 30 mins time it's warm...

Ours is on for all the hours someone is in the house, and the thermostat set to 19 during waking hours, and 18 or 17 (if I get my way) when we're asleep. Don't see the reason for being upset over it. The price of gas for 12 months doesn't even form a fraction of my wife's shoe-purchasing costs.

My sister is living with me at the moment and she insists on having the 3KW electric heater on from the moment she wakes up until the moment she goes to sleep.
Driving me mad.

It doesn't even toggle on and off because she has it set to 6 and the room is just venting heat. It will never get to 6.

My house is not quite 800 years old by a fair bit, however until I fill the gaps in the floorboards and make the sash windows not draughty and double glazed (unlikely).
Very expensive to get the windows done properly

That's the one. Set it 17C and tear the knob off.
