R8 V10 Manual? Why so many VS Gallardo LP560?
Discussion
Firstly, THIS IS NOT AN R8 VS GALLARDO DEBATE! There is already plenty of those on here.
Just been trawling through the classifieds and I've notice that most R8 V10s seem to be manual, whereas most Gallardo LP560s seem to be E-gear. I was just wondering why so few Gallardo’s are spec'd with the manual whereas most R8s are? It seems strange that the R8 is the only supercar that seems to buck the “flappy paddles” trend.

I agree, the R tronic has been panned in reviews on ther Audi and most road testers have advised not going for it. The E gear hasn't had such bad press.
Also, alot of Lambo's are driven in London by bankers/posers etc who aren't actually drivers, they want something that is easy to drive. Cynical but true, in some cases.
Why you wouldn't want an open gate when it is an option is beyond me, especially as it's 5k cheaper.

As above, the R tronic is not great unless you are going full bore on the track. The Gallardo system is better which is strange as both cars share the same gearbox. The R8 is likely to be one of the last cars of its type where the manuel is an option which is a real shame as its a wonderful gearbox to use.
I also agree with above about the user profile

Could be, quite a few reviews have said 'don't wast your money on the R tronic' especially given the fac that the manual is such a nice box
I really do believe that the R8 is more popular with driving enthusiasts and the lambo is more for posers who like cars that are basically automatics!?

Not too sweeping a statement then !I really do believe that the R8 is more popular with driving enthusiasts and the lambo is more for posers who like cars that are basically automatics!?
Most probably the reason 560's are all e-gear is that its a good system and most people want it for resale. Additionally many 560 owners have considered the 430 F1, so its a v natural comparison to want the e-gear lambo.
As has been said, R8 V10 r-tronic has been panned in the press - nuff said.

I would really like a 560, but don't want to go down the paddle route again.
A good mate had one of the first R8's in paddleshift. He did do a few track days in it. Bought a manual version for finer control. I briefly drove the manual R8 around the paddock at Rockingham so no informed opinion. But having watched slippy at le mans classic attempting to stay with Mr Bridger in his Carrera GT and my own 911GT the R8 tied itself in knots. Under damped and over sprung. A favourite mistake of many manufacturers. He now has an RS6 with the twin turbo Gallardo engine. About to have a 720 bhp re map I believe. I spoke to him yesterday and he was telling me that it won't pull more than 190. I said I guess it is speed limited to 300kph. Anyone know for sure. Imagine being overtaken by a loon in an RS6 at 190 with a labrador in the back. Slippy is thankfully totally nuts.

Agree totally! I wonder if he thinks about all the "nobs" buying cars from him on his way home in his ford fiesta! Would be brilliant to let him say that then tell him you were here to buy a paddleshift 560 but would now go elsewhere.
It did put me off buying anything from him. What did come out of the conversation was the fact that reading between the lines they wouldn't buy back a manual Gallardo as they didn't think it could be resold. It would be interesting to do a survey on the type of people that buy cars like these and why they would not consider a Gallardo with a Manuel box. How much pressure would a dealer put on a potential customer to go for an e-gear knowing that he was likely to see that car back as a tradein in two to three years time?
How many do you think are true fans of the car like most PH readers and how many bought it as a status symbol/posing pouch and does that effect your choice of gearbox?
How many customers are suckered in by the F1 connection that this is the way forward?
In London I have seen many cars of this type that have probably never left the city centre and let’s be honest are still rare on the open roads of this country. Almost to a man they are all e-gear.
I love the Manuel box in the R8 V10, it’s a wonderful thing. Couple that with perfectly placed peddles and you can have endless hours of fun getting your heal and toeing right and listening to the clack clack of the gate. To this day I have not managed to find a Gallardo 560 with a Manuel box to test…Shame
At the end of the day I'm afraid the F1/DSG type gearbox will be the future. They are faster and more economical (if somewhat less fun in my opinion) and once economies of scale come into play will probably be cheaper too.
And don’t be surprised if at some point in the near future the EU will make Manuel gearboxes illegal in all new cars because of the green issue
On a side note I can see that in a few years the value of the Manuel cars will go up, why you may ask. Well think about this. The F1 style boxes will always be more expensive to maintain which is always going to be on the mind of the second hand buyer. And second I can see a kind of nostalgia thing kicking in a few years time when Manuel boxes become a thing of the past. Also they will be rarer than the F1 boxes and therefore more desirable.... just a thought

"ees gearbox Mr Fawlty"
sorry

I'd imagine customer profiles is the biggest factor here. I imagine that the extra 5k for an R-tronic R8 is hard to swallow for the majority of R8 buyers.
