Hey up chaps,

I'm after a bit of advice relating to earphones. I was pretty much all set to order a pair of Klipsch Image S4 earphones from Amazon just now but although there are many good reviews, I've found a few which say they aren't as good as they could be or others at the same price range.

The alternatives that I've found so far are the V-Moda’s Vibe Duo which don't look too great but if they sound alright I'm sure I could forgive the looks.

And the other set are the Klipsch Custom 2, which were originally a very expensive set of earphones back when they were released in 2007, but can now be had for the same price as the S4s.

I understand that I'm not going to get the very best sound quality for the money I'm spending, but would like to know that what I'm getting is the best I can get at that price range.

Many thanks for your help.

In ear ones, I have struggled to beat the sound my Bose ones give me.

What sound signature are you after, warm/bassy, cold/analytical or natural/neutral?

Until the wire cracks. I've had 3 pairs, same thing on every pair, usually happens 8-14 months in, even if you look after them.

For sound quality, I agree they are fabulous...but for 80 quid I expect them to last longer than a year.

Mine are older than that, I always look after my stuff. I keep them in the hardcase they came in??

Yep, yep same, same.

It's not just me. Look on Amazon reviews - it's the most common fault with them by far. If you hook them over your ears (like they suggest) that wire cracks. I was in the market for another pair of inner ear phone recently and nearly got some Shure's again, but couldjn't be arsed with them breaking.

Sound quality, they are awesome, but build quality is poor. That is why I wouldn't recommend them.

Now my Sennheiser HD25 Pros on the other hand - big cans, cost 150 quid about 5 years ago, been dragged across continents, kicked around, still going strong, industry standard engineer headphones, DJ headphones etc..sound quality is unbelievable.

Would recommend them in an instant, but it's outside the scope of this post.

I'd say bassy would be to my suiting, but something that offers good overall clarity. I don't really know what I'm talking about to be honest, but definitely want some good bass.

I've completely discounted the Shures because of all the problems I've seen with durability, so they are no go.

I'm still swaying towards the Klipsch's although there a couple of earphones that stood out to me in your thread.

Fischer Audio Eterna

Meelectronics M11

How would you say these two compare to the Klipsch?

And also to the bloke with the Sennheiser's, I actually got some closed ear HD215s for Xmas, and I have to say I am very impressed with them, especially for £60. Just after something smaller for travelling with now.

Cheers for the advice, keep it coming. smile

Well, I was similar to you polarbert - wanting to spend about that money, as I mentioned I was after some. In the end I've chosen a pair of Sennheiser 300CXs. I also only mention them because you suggested you might like a bassy headphone, and they have a bassy balance. They cost 30 crisp english pounds. No, they are not as good as the Shure's, but yes they are comfortable, and they have an asymmetric lead as well.

I'd recommend those, and spend the difference on some more music. Everyone's a winner! smile

The M11s are only £31 from overstock: http://www.overstock.com/Electronics/MEElectronics...

I can't find the Eterna listed anywhere. Currently swaying toward the Klipsch, but the M11s are interesting.

Might look into the Sennheisers as well.

Can anyone tell me if those M11s are noise cancelling/reducing like the others I've been looking at?

£46 including delivery from America.

Worth it? Or should I spend £60 on the Klipsch Image S4s?

Another possibility. No idea what the sound is like.

The only thing at the moment putting me off the Klipsch earphones is the fact that they don't seem to have all that much bass to them.

Go for the Fischer Audio Eterna, and get some foam-hybrid tips for them, they have very good bass and soundstage.

Generally speaking, the smaller the IEM, the deeper they can be inserted into the ear canal, and the better they isolate. M11 is a small IEM smile

I've heard rumours about Fischer Audio starting up their own online shop in February, but for now these are the resellers:
http://www.fischeraudio.com/place.php

The US/Canadian store seems to have £ prices, so they should be able to ship to UK, the Scandinavian store should be able to as well, but I expect the prices to be "scandinavianized" by a 150-200% tax.

Cheeers for that. At the minute I'm persuaded to go for the M11s. Will have to look into the Fischer ones a bit more though.

Bose are OK. JVC also do some OK ones.

Keep coming back to my Sony EX-91SL though. Really like them.

The lowlier version (e.g. 71s) are also good IME.

(And I don't much like Sony products generally).

Etymotic hf-2 are in budget and have a superb natural sound quality. No bass boost or any of that nonsense just clear sound as recorded
