A bit of detective work required, if anyone can help.

I've finally managed to get some old 16mm and 8mm film that was shot by my Grandfather onto DVD via VHS. Amongst lots of sea voyages and other stuff is footage of a holiday taken to Germany in August 1937.

It starts in the Rhine region and I think that one of the first towns (at 1.21) is Boppard - there's a clothes shop called HC Stammer that seems to still exist today. The castle at 2.34 on the river is I think Kaub. But the town or city at 2.47 is a mystery - Riart's Bodega doesn't throw anything up on Google. The Autobahn at 3.07 could be anywhere, as by 1937, it seems that quite a lot of the network was built.

At 5.03 there is a big city - Berlin perhaps? Or more likely a large city in the west of the country. At 5.45 there seems to be some very modern apartment complexes that must have been quite new at the time.

Amongst all the swastikas and nazi youth marches, my Grandparents and his other couple (best man I think) are driving a Ford V8 Station Wagon, that McNab inherited at a later date.

Anyway, video is here - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rziUAFfoFaA . Enjoy!

I couldn't identify any of the places in the video but absolutely fascinating footage. Thank you for sharing! I love this sort of stuff.

Are your parents English? Where did they drive the car from?

wonderful. Cant help with the lcoations. That woody keeps appearing, and in the shot at the bar the rh door is open, so it might be British and RHD. The numberplate is WS 743?

At 5:27 I think it may be Berlin as the building in the background looks like the with the "Neue Wache" building in the foreground (I lived there and walked past this building many times):

But I may be completely wrong!

The car is a Ford V8 Station Wagon similar to this;

McNab inherited it 10 years later - ironically, probably around the time he was doing National Service in Germany!

Numberplate was WS7433, but DVLA doesn't seem to think it still exists.

Looking at the surrounding buildings during and after the march, it does look like the Opera House perhaps, the the University? opposite. Many thanks!

Been living here for 35 years so....... (all IMHO of course)
2.34 definitely Kaub (the castle in the river is the customs castle) and the castle on the hill has been rebuilt, but profile (tower etc) essentially the same.
3.15 Autobahn (very flat, possibly between Hannover and Berlin
4.58 1/2 timbered houses typical of central Germany
5.27 definitely Unter den Linden and Adlon Hotel
6.17 A berlin lake possibly the Teglersee and the Pfaueninsel (Pier looks familiar)and after that one of the Berlin canals from a tour boat
