Laptop with numeric keypad?
Discussion
Hi All,
We need to buy a laptop with a numeric keypad (the mrs says it's a must have). It will be used for surfing the web, standard MS Office stuff and editing photos and video.
I've heard poor things about Vista (I'm no techie, though) and am wondering if Windows 7 is any better? We don't want any of this 'blue screen of death' stuff!
Budget wise we don't think we need to spend anything over £600, TBH, as we're not gamers and it's for around the home use, so size isn't an issue.
Most laptops don't seem to come with the keypad (and the Mrs doesn't want a USB one) and even if they do you can't tell from the spec sheet or photos online (from various review sites) as the photos are useless! Argh!
Can someone please point us in the right laptop direction?
Thanks in advance,
C.

Just bought this for a cheap work lap-top to run Office and Surf etc. Very pleased and Asus has the lowest warranty claims of any manufacturer apparently. It fits your criteria. We need to buy a laptop with a numeric keypad (the mrs says it's a must have). It will be used for surfing the web, standard MS Office stuff and editing photos and video.

popped into aldi for some beers on the way home last week and ended up leaving with one of the 17 inch median lappies they had in. Pretty good spec for 500 sheets, very good infact.
Comes with windows 7, numeric keypad and everything else seems fine. if memory serves it's got a 320gb hard drive, 4gb ram, and can I hell remember what CPU is in it. The screen is cracking for colour reproduction, better than a lot of higher end ones. I bought it to replace a dead HP laptop, which cost twice the price (I'd already replaced it with a macbook pro but figured I'd have a windows machine just incase).

I've always had numeric keypads on my laptops because I've wanted huge screens for gaming, so look out for widescreen ones or 17"+, they're more likely to have them.
Having said that I've noticed these days that manufacturers have been copying the Macbook-look of having lots of empty space around the keyboard, not filling it up with extra keys. My last purchase was a Toshiba Satellite which has the keyboard, but certainly wasn't in your price range.
And go for Windows 7, not Vista.

ive got an acer 5536, which has all of the requirements you've listed. mine was £550 6-7months ago from pc world. my mum and sister also have the same laptop now, they got them from ebuyer, was under £500 just before xmas. comes with vista installed but the free win7 upgrade which just needs ordered from acer.
although since upgrading my laptop, ive had nothing but problems with it. although the other two are totally fine.
id just say be careful with some acers though. heat can be a problem with some. im already thinking about getting a new laptop soon, although ive had mine less than a year. whereas the other 2 acers are perfectly fine.

Well, here I am, sitting in the lounge, on the new laptop. It's sooo nice not to be sat in our office on the PC!
The Mrs came home with an Acer Aspire 7736G and a few other goodies.
I must say I rather like it. Best thing is the wireless...it connected right from the off, despite three to four foot thick walls (old farmhouse) between the laptop and the hub!
Thanks for the advice and suggestions.
Cheers,
C.
