New cam? / Which Cam do I have?
Discussion
sorry in advance if these are stupid questions......
I'm in the process of stripping down by 500 and I want to check the state of my cam and what cam it is. So here come the questions :
1. Is there a recommended way to check for wear (other than visually looking for rounded lobes)?
2. Are there makers markings on them that should help me work out what cam it is? Will I easily be able to tell the difference between the standard cam and an after-market cam?
3. Looking at cams from V8D, I notice that they recommend double valve springs for some cams. Looking at mine last night, I already have them. Is this standard on a 500?

Cam should be stamped on the end, probably TVR435RM if standard 500
I believe TVR Power 885 is the evolved equivalent cam
I believe visual inspection is the best way of telling if it need replacement (wear pattern etc)

Cam will have to come out to see what it is as stamping marks are on the far end.As already mentioned it most likely will be a 435RM. Mine was and an 885 is what will be going back in.
Just by looking at the visual condition and the lift on all lifters should tell you if it is worn on any lobes.
Most 500s have double springs from new and this has been mentioned as overkill and partly contributarory to the cam wear.
Mine was also showing signs of excessive preload as heel of some lobes were worn and evidence that a couiple of valves were not actually fully closing!!!!

As JKY and WokingWedger said, a visual inspection is normally enough to see camshaft lobe wear, although a DTI (aka clock) on a stand or depth micrometer can also be used if still unsure. Also ensure that you check the followers for wear, it is not uncommon for them to become dished as they wear.
The camshaft that we removed from our Chimaera 400HC after 70,000 miles was very badly worn, one of the lobes was providing a mere 2.4mm of lift! This was also a TVR 435RM camshaft, see about half-way down the page at http://www.lloydspecialistdevelopments.co.uk/tvr-c... for more info on this camshaft change. Note that we fit single valve springs with our new (Kent H218) camshaft as we were not tuning for power above 6000rpm.
