I used to run a squash ladder where I used to work.
Mine was manual because it was very simple and there were probably only 3 or 4 games a week that matches were not friendlies. It was just a case of making the ladder/score sheet look good so it stood out on the notice board.
If a player challenged anyone one or two positions higher on the ladder, they would swap positions if they beat them.
All I asked was that the players emailed me the scores and time they played to ensure that the ladder was amended in the right order. Not once did two matches start at the same time so we didn't have a rule if that did happen. Asking the players what time they finished (when one of them reached 3 games) would have been the obvious way.
All friendlies were still recorded and put up on the notice board. For friendlies and ladder matches, the first to 3 games won, and if they ran out of time before either player got to 3, it was a draw and their positions didn't change.

We have 12 leagues with 6 players in each one.
Every 6 weeks new leagues are done; the top two players go up a league, the bottom two go down and the two in the middle stay where they are.
All games are bst of 5, scoring to 9.
Points: 3-0 = 4-1
3-1 = 4-2
3-2 = 4-3
The reason for points to '4' is that you get a point for turning up.
Has worked perfectly well for years and we are a very succesful squash club with world ranked players.
