Lighting around heater controls

Since owning my car (2003 s2) the surrounds of the 3 heater knobs have never lit up - the temp one, the fan speed and the one which directs heat to either passengers or windscreen have been black when dark. I went to start up the car today as it's been sat for a couple of weeks and the battery was almost dead. I managed to bump start it and when I returned the drive I saw that the backing lights were on and illuminating the controls like a Christmas tree, I was so chuffed I told my dad who was aboviously totally disinterested however 2 seconds later they had gone out again! Now I've seen these actually can and do work I'm wondering if any ideas on the cause?I'm assuming loose wiring in behind the controls but how easy is this to get to? Is there anyone who has had similar issues and rectified them?! In a way I wish it had never come on but whatever jiggery pokery having a flat battery has done I'm now looking to have the "luxury" of illumination on a permanent basis!
