my 996 turbo is currently standard. come the time when my warranty expires, im undecided what to do with regards to renewing it, as id love to modify the car just a little, and understand i will lose my warranty if i do it now.

my main bugbear is the rubbish noise this car makes. ive been lucky enough to previously had an sl55, mtm rs6,m3's, various scoobies evos, skyline gtr's etc , and i can honestly say all of them sounded better than this 996t. its totally boring, and a little hard to gel with!

so my question is, does a sports exhaust (eg milltek with sports cats) make a big difference to this car, enough maybe to forget a warranty come renewal time?
i had a milltek put on my old rs6, and it made it sound much much better, yet i had a milltek put on my last e46 m3, and it ruined it, was droney and boomy and lost the rasp.

what effect does a sports exhaust have on a 996 turbo?

many thanks for any advice

definately sounds better! how does it sound from the inside, is it a 'nice' sound, or like my old evo6, a bloody loud racket?

Sounds good from the inside (not as good as my tubi) but still good.

They do sound crazy on full chat higher up the revs as most turbo cars do.

Get a milltek once it carbons up the sound can't be beaten for the price! Makes the very poor sounding turbo actually sound like a sports car. No drone either!

Oh forgot to add, I tried both cargraphic and designtek before the miltek. Both were very disapointing!

Which one is the one of choice?
100 cell or 200 cell cat?

Does it change performance much?

To OP, get it remapped beforehand, then you won' t have too much problem to 'gel' with the car....

I believe the 200 cell cats are the ones to go for, 100 cell cats are more prone to throwing a CEL. I think stock cats are 400 cell.

Mine is 200Cell cats. I was told by Fearn thats the one to go for to avoid CEL. There was another reason but i cant remember. Give matt a buzz and ask him. He may even have a couple of sound files, not that the recorded sound will be anything like reality!

The 200 Cell is the one if your car is running standard turbos. If you think that you might ever run anything like K24/18gs, then buy the 100 cell, because that is all you can run to get the best results.

Neither should throw CELs. I actually thought the standard was 300 but I could be wrong.

My turbos are anything but standard and I managed to obtain some very very good gains. 100 cell will almost certainly throw up a CEL. The lack of cells fools the sensor into thinking its running rich. There is a fix by cargraphic which is a washer for the sensors in the cat which makes the sensors sit a litle bit further out than usual. This pevents them from picking up false readings which occurs when the sensor is further submerged.

Not true. I run 100cells on a remapped K16's and have no CEL issues. Europipe.

I know you run non standard and have good gains, but as you know I have K24/18gs from Protomotive going on to mine in the next two weeks, and they perform to the max with either 100 cells or straight pipes - it is well known. So I have a Milltek 100 cell.
Yes, they (turbos) work on 200 cells or for that matter std exhaust, but my point was to highlight to the OP that if he plans to upgrade in the future, you need to take it into account.

I've got a Designtec Titanium super light weight sport exhaust system fitted to mine. It only weighs 12 Kg versus the standard OEM systems 48Kg. It has 200 cell cats and dynoed at +35 HP. Cost £3,500 fitted.

Sounds very good for a 911 Turbo but having had a F355 with a level 1 Capristo its a totally different sound. It is loud in and outside, without any droning, but its not the F1 scream from the V8 and nor do you really get any popping and banging on overrun. I still miss the F355 sound and the Capristo only cost £1,500.

I hated the titanium Design tek that I had, was way too loud and not a particularly nice sound.

Came straight off and was replaced with a Milltek,

Honestly, no drone at all at any revs. I find it quite docile and understated but then most things are compared to the capristo on the F355. Mates tell me the turbo is loud on the outside and obviously through tunnels it is but inside its more than fine for me. Maybe I'm just deaf from the Ferrari days.

Going back to a Ferrari F430 when the right spec ( red and Crema racing seats.etc.... ),one appears and thats sure to be getting another capristo

I still think it sounds like a Mercedes van I'm afraid, but your car and the Aerokit look superb.
