As there are a fair few militray folk on here I thought I would try and find out if you are starting to feel the effects of the recent cutbacks, both official & un-official.

Whilst I have yet to see a reduction in flying hours there is a definite sense of an 'empty wallet' around the base, everything we do seems to be under scrutiny cost wise. Travel & Subsistence is taking a major hit, especially where things like AT and 'jollies' are concerned.

Most shockingly of all the RAF are having to travel 2nd class and downgrade from 5* to 4* wink

Pulling out of Afganistan/Iraq might save a few quid...

Just a thought...

I deal mainly with the US military (work on the F135) but since we're late-cycle I don't think we'll get hit yet.

I feel sorry for the boys at Cottesmore though, although I'm not sure if I'm allowed to talk about much more than that.

It's a great idea - we could collaberate and close The Channel; and make the Dutch go the long way around!

Fairly sure the Froggies are still a little twitchy at the mention of collaboration.

How have you found the job market to be?

I've heard so several very experienced techies (ground comms) struggling to find a decent job.

Got 15 months left, working on a camp that is in the middle of changing platforms. It has to be the most tedious work I have ever done, there is no budget to do anything. Spares are a nightmare, the building we are in is falling apart. However lots of promises that Typhoon will be the answer to all our woes (for those that will be allowed to stay).

It feels like we are in a constant state of limbo, not knowing when we are going, or where we're going, what's going to happen. Constant rumours of a two year promotion freeze, job cuts etc, moves towards an Army style of promotion (3 year seniority, possible 35yo WO anyone?)

When I joined up there was over 100k in, loads of time for sport, detachments were good and there was a real energy to what we did and how we went about it. I probably need a move to something else, I admit that, however I am so jaundiced at what appears to lie in the future I've decided to rise above the rest and become a MR

Had a few tentative offers, with good money. I'm hoping I'm timing it right cos once the recession stops the forces are going to haemorrhage people.

Well not so bad directly, I feel the same empty wallet thing here, but then they are shutting the place!
Travel costs, removal of AT budget e.t.c are all making a bit of a moral vaccuum and gradually starting to piss people off, especially seens as the squadrons have all fked off to Vegas to save face in front of the septics.
That must be costing fking thousands, and yet the Cottesmore football team have been told if you want to play station sport, you're not going to get transport, you have to take your own cars?! Seems a bit of an imbalance to me.
Hey ho, can't stop the 2 winged master race though can you, we are all here to support them after all.
Exactly.

There is no money to fund things which would actually provide a little bit of morale yet plenty for Friday afternoon jollies at £80k an hour or whatever it is to keep the jet flying!

yes....depends which part of the budget you mean.....it isn't just one big pot of money.

I think they probably come from the recruiting/advertising/public liason type areas of budget.
