Recently read a lot of threads on PH about what some of us may consider underhand or unscrupulous approaches to things/life.

Do people still "shake on a deal" or approach life with "my word is my bond". Subsequently, honouring any commitment even if they lose out?

Absolutely. It's about all we have to distinguish ourselves from the scum.

Mike Brewer recommends it on Wheeler Dealers. He's always telling people to "put yer 'and out feller" and shake on it. I despise him with every cell in my body. Cockney cock.

Mike Brewer is definitely a cock, but that doesn't mean honouring one's word is a bad thing...

Certainly a value I live by (and, especially, work by).

Hardly meet anyone at work who has the same standards though.

Agreed. 'Tell the customer what they need to hear in order to sign the cheque, then pass the responsibility for delivering what you promised to someone else' seemingly being the order of the day.

Not that I'm cynical, or anything...

That's because it's foolish. Important things need to be written down in a contract. This concept of a handshake is very noble but has never really been the case and will lead to your downfall if the issue being agreed upon is even slightly complicated. A romantic fallacy.

A handshake is better than a signature in my book.

I should issue a contract everytime I get a colleague to agree to do something for me by a certain date?

I've had so many rows with various people I've worked for/with because I refuse to:-
a) Make a promise that is not in my control to keep.
b) promise something which I know I can't deliver!

It's much easier than having to lie when it goes pear-shaped!

No, I recommend shaking their hands each time and telling them that your word is your bond!
