What can I expect? Really freezing cold? Dodgy single track roads?

I've never been that far north, but we're (6 of us) heading up next weekend for a gig and i wanted a bit of a heads up.

Is it worth going further north to John O groats?

Is there anywhere nearby (50 mile radius) that would be good to stay on the Sunday? I fancy seeing a bit of the north whilst i'm up there.

Cheers
Dan

Roads to Wick are pretty good, or were before the recent snow/ice/frost so expect potholes.

Nothing much to see at John 'O Groats but as you are so close why not go there, it is the north easternmost corner of the mainland, could also visit Dunnet Head, most northerly point on the mainland.

Place to stay? Well I would go to Inverness, you have to go back that way anyway, and there are probably more choices there than anywhere alse in the area.

Good luck with the weather, (and the locals) wink

More likely to be damp and chilly with breezy wind chill rather than actually freezing. Chances of snow and ice very low, but with this winter who knows!

All main roads normal single carrageway (i.e no dual carrageway) but plenty of singe carrigway backroads in the county if that is what you are looking for.

Wick is a dump, Thurso is (marginally) better but it depends what you want to do. Don't expect much night life wherever you stay, but there are some decent pubs. There has already been some discussion on another thread about hotels.

Nothing much at John O'Groats but since you are up there it is only a short trip to see it so you can say you've been there. Note it is not the most Northerly point, that is Dunnet Head this is worth a visit for the views again, only a short drive away.

If you in no hurry to return you can head west and return south via BettyHill and the B871 (single track).

Before the complaints come in I am originally from Thurso and would probably live up there if I could make a living.

I agree with don'y bother with John O'Groats but Dunnet head is good and Duncansbay to the east of John O'Groats has some spectacular views over the stacks, they were in the title sequence of the tv series Coast. If you want a big empty space to walk Sinclair bay has a big beach
