Does anyone use mobile broadband at home? I am looking at possibilities and understand it uses 3G. How does this translate into speeds?
I'm also wondering how the limits are worked out. At the moment I'm limited to a 2GB download limit on Virgin Media adsl and have never gone over this. Is the mobile broadband connection worked out in the same way as adsl?
I've read that a 3GB usage on the vodafone mobile broadband translates to around 100 hours of use a month. Does this sound about right?
Also, is it possible to share a USB mobile broadband via wifi to serve more than one device?

Depends what the use is on how many hours you get per limit.
100 hours web browsing will clearly use less than say 100 hours emailing with attachments - it all depends on what you download.
Pretty sure you can use it - I saw T-mobile, I think it was, offering the USB modem in a docking station type thing so you could wirelessly connect.
I have one although not on Vodafone and find speeds a bit ropey to be honest - not sure I'd use it as a solution for home.

I'm forced to use mobile broadband (iPhone tethered to my laptop) as for the past 3.5 months no one has been able to install a landline at my house.
Speeds are terrible compared to full fat broadband. A 5 minute HD YouTube vid probably takes 10 minutes before you can watch it.
Why not complain in stronger terms that you're getting crap speeds from Virgin. Seems a strange way to go about a problem?

It's an old house with a very old phoneline. Without paying BT £168 to install a new master socket I've been trying to think of a cheaper and easier way to get broadband. Mobile broadband seemed the best solution but also seems hampered by very slow speeds and hefty fees if you go over the download limit.
I've been recomended a new adsl faceplate for the master socket as a quick fix. I've just ordered one so I'll see how it goes.

you can keep track of how much data / time you are using on the 02 connection manager. Only had it a week so far so still finding my feet with it myself!
If you run out of data, simply top up, 1 day, 1 week or a month. As its pay & go, if you use up all your allowance, it simply wont connect you until you top up, therefore it avoids being charged extra on a contract, where you would continue to be connected but charged for the extra data useage.

Thanks to Talk Talk being so utterly st st I've been using Vodafone PAYG 3G mobile as my only internet source for 3 months now.
I get per-paid 1Gb sims off Ebay for around £6.
Each sim lasts me about 1 month with 3hrs surfing per day (so around 100 hrs).
You need a good signal to get top speeds otherwise it can be slow.
I've got into the habit of using it at work during lunch to access all the sites I need that are blocked at work.
(anticipates much EFA pron references)
