Windows updates???
Discussion
On Monday this week, we bought another PC. Nothing special or expensive but it is nice to look at. Tower case is only about 1/4 size of my previous one.
Since setting it up on monday evening, at least twice a day it tells me "updates are ready to install". My old PC was also set to recieve automatic updates, but it never got this many. Is it just because it is a new Pc and playing catchup?
Or should I just switch off updates and run without.

It's playing catch-up. The machine would have had a standard (for that supplier) image put on it and there will have been quite a few Tuesday updates since then. Most updates are cumulative so the later ones won't be downloaded and insalled until the first ones have been. This can make for a few restarts as well.
I do sympathise as I've just been patching up a fresh XP install from an XP SP1 CD

Why on earth would you want to switch of updates really.
All you had to do on monday night was run windows update, install what it finds and reboot.
Rerun windows update and install what it finds and reboot.
You should only have to do this maybe 3 times to get all the updates, as some updates need others installed first.
While we are on the subject, make sure your antivirus is up to date as well.

I have Norton 360 installed on the desktop and on Mrs TT's laptop, never had any problems (oops, shouldn't have said that eh!!)
As far as disabling updates, a lot of friends and family never run with updates or defrag, clean up or anything and they never seem to have any problems. I don't want to switch off updates, just wasn't sure if what it was doing was normal, as said--playing catch up. I try to keep my Pc clean and tidy with automatic cleaning and servicing

Topton,
You can turn off Windows updates if you want, just remember to run it once a week, easiest to leave it on.
You will get absolutely slaughtered here for using Norton but we use it in this house and never once had a problem and we wouldn't be without it.
As for family members who never update etc. could be they will get away with it forever, could be not - their choice.

I believe Chlamydia is fairly symptom free as well......a lot of friends and family never run with updates or defrag, clean up or anything and they never seem to have any problems.
You can also use the vaccination analogy: If a certain percentage of the herd is vaccinated then the chances of any non-vaccinated person becoming infected drop significantly (just because you haven't had a jab against measles doesn't mean you are definitely going to get measles) It's the same meme on the public internet.

D/L SP3 and then make a slipstream disc. Will make install a whole lot easier and quicker!I do sympathise as I've just been patching up a fresh XP install from an XP SP1 CD

I'd already got SP2 and 3 on a USB stick so that part was relatively quick. Still had three lots of updates (with about 40 updates each) to download and install. The download's fast (20 Meg line) the install is fairly quick (fresh clean install) it's the repeated restarts that get on my nerves. How I coped with Win '95 I'll never know.

Jinx - look at creating a slipstreamed xp install disc from your sp1 cd. Google should help, saves long installs waiting for the updates to install. I do sympathise as I've just been patching up a fresh XP install from an XP SP1 CD
