I notice that my Vodaphone BB is often several hours behind my PC in showing new emails and some don't appear at all.

I have thought of a few technical explanations other than the Vodafone service is just rubbish:

The Vodafone signal at our office is poor therefore the emails simply don't arive until the signal improves, for example when I pop upstairs.

By deleting emails promptly from my PC, by the time Vodafone does its less periodic checks they are gone from the server.

Any other explanations?

I'd say you've figured out the answer there...

The handheld monitors the signal strength and it won't even bother trying to sync if it's less than about 20%.
