We live in the north-west and normally get to Europe by going Dover - Dunkirk with the car. An email from Norfolkline is offering a return crossing for £34. Pretty cheap. Geographically it would be easier to cross from Hull but the crossings seem too expensive to make it worth the while. Does anyone have any sugestions of a cheap ferry crossing? Thanks.

Norfolkline are brilliant as long as you get there early enough, they apparently have a habit of overselling ferries and locking people out!
I've done quite a lot of looking into the best value ferry crossings in the past and they always seem to come up trumps, it is also very quick to get out of the port and onto the Autoroute.

I used Norfolkline (Dover-Dunkirk) many times and have found them to be helpful especially on low ground clearance for the Caterham. Never had a over-booking problem.

Managed to get a 2 week return in July for just £17 (seventeen). Can't complain for 2 people and car.

LD lines are usually pretty cheap, but not many sailings per day is the usual issue.

Same here, use them all the time to go back home (South of Holland, Belgian/Germany Borders corner) and never had any problems.

I usually take the 02:00 AM ferry as i can get to Dover in just about an hour then because the roads are empty, and i get to Holland on the other side before the rushhour in France/Belgium starts.

Am actually using them again this thursday morning, booked an 02:00 AM ferry for wednessday morning but got invited to a dinnerparty on the wednessday evening so rang them up to amend my booking, but that would cost me £ 20, and i only paid £ 17, for the actual crossover but the lady on the phone was nice and she adviced me to just book another trip for that thursday as that would be cheaper, and she would cancel the original then.

So instead of paying £ 20, to amend my trip to 1 day later i ended up paying £ 13,50 for that same trip just a day later.

Also no problems with a low car, had to go up this ramp to get onto the boat really really slowly last time, and as soon as they saw that they came out with 2 big plank of woods to use, which i didn't need in the end. But instead of going up the small ramp inside the boat to park with the rest of the cars i was guided to where the trucks park, so i didn't have to go up more steap ramps.
