How would you find out the type of stone used to build a house? The reason I'm asking is I want to replace some damaged stone on my house and I need to know what type of stone it is to replace it with! (The buildings Grade 2 listed so they want it replaced like for like).

Cheers

Where in the North are you from Dan? Should be an indictor of what sort of stone you have. Alternatively do you have a local reclamation place nearby. They maybe able to give you a hand if you approach them with a view to selling you something aged and in keeping with your home.

Cheers.

I think I'll take a picture and see if they can tell off that.

I live in Blackburn btw. It looks like a type of sandstone.

Try getting a copy of the Saturday Yorkshire Post, usually someone is advertising reclaimed stone.

Matching can be big problem though, around us there are quite a few sandstone quarries, although most are now defunct, the stone can vary so much within a mile or so of the different quarries.

This is the site of probably the largest operator in the area for new stone.

Don't know if this helps, this is a sample of the above quarries stone.
