i was looking at some matchbox and hotwheels today. i know they are from the same distributor but i preferred the matchbox as they are a ,on the whole ,more true to life.

Always loved Matchbox but they were never the same when they changed to superfast wheels. The early cars with real steering wheels are my favourites.

Hot Wheels changed the face of the smaller pocket money sized models in the early 70's and almost bankrupted Lesney Products, who survived by introducing Superfast wheels. Primarily they were toys, rather than today's collectors models, so the need for speed was paramount and the old solid axles were naff for this.

I am into drag racing and american muscle cars and hot wheels are excellent for this. I have a lot of mint boxed Matchbox 75's for nostalgia. My 900 or so diecast collection (a mixture of toys and collectables) is constantly derided by my good lady who does'nt do sentiment or value history! Women eh.

I have to agree. Matchbox are more detailed, I've just taken a look on their website and made a comparison to my Hot Wheels srt8 dodge challenger and there is quite a bit more detail on the pictures on the site than there is on my model.

Matchbox weren't always owned by Mattel though were they?

I will say that modern toys are not as heavy or solid as they were in the 80's as a kid, even boxed the new hotwheels cars weigh less but I think the detail has been significantly improved.
