Hi Guys
A friend has a problem with his 56 335d Coupe. He went out parked the car up and left it for a few hours on returning he put the key in the slot only to be told by the I-Drive that there was a steering lock fault and not to switch off the car. No dash lights appeared apart from a red wheel and padlock symbol on the centre display thing.

The car would not start, go into neutral or let the steering move at all, AA came out managed to get into neutral but thats about it.
Ive heard that BMW replaced some steering columns under warranty but as this is a 2006 car I assume the warranty has run out and a new column is £350 just in parts.

Anyone have any ideas or suggestions as to what is the problem or how to try and get BMW to replace it ?

Thanks in advance

This happened to me with my E90 325i a few months ago.

Started off with the yellow steering wheel and padlock icon on the display. The car wouldn't start but after a few attempts managed to get it going. The display disappeared for a couple of days only then to resurface but this time the icon was red in colour. Luckily the car appeared fine in starting and steering.

I was away in Germany so my Dad arrange to drop it off at the dealers to get it fixed. The bill came in at £2400! Luckily covered under warranty.

usually get this if you park and switch off on a lock, just turn the steering wheel as it comes up its a bit like normal steering locks when using a key sometimes needs a little turn of the wheel
