I was in the passenger seat and in fairness it was caused due to the rear brake circuit failing leaving us with a lot less braking than we needed on the fast entry to quarry. There's 2 lines for quarry, the brake into the apex line which we were on and the more sweeping line that i think the Saxo was on, without the rears we didn't stand a chance.
It did have the potential to get a little heated in the pits, but thankfully my driver is a race driver, went straight to the clerk of the course and he verified the mechanical failure once we'd found it and worked out what had happened.
The poor old Saxo driver and his mates didn't have much to say after that . . . except confirming he wasn't insured and he'd only gone out on track after his mates encouraged him to

These things can happen at track days, though. Thankfully not often. Usually, it has to be said, it isn't mechanical failure that's to blame - as it was in this case.
Honestly - I live in fear of hitting the brake pedal and nothing happening.
It's only happened to me once - in an old Vectra - when the rear pads sheared away from the backing plate suddenly reducing braking by, well, most of it, actually. Thankfully I was braking for a junction on my right and could just overshoot.
There but for the grace of God and all that...
It reminds you of a couple of things . . . the value of insurance at track days as it's not your own ability you're always insuring. That mechanical failures do happen and this was a meticulously maintained competition car.
I remember another large shunt at Folembray whilst we were on a PH day and there had been a long debate on the forum as to whether the owner should or should not insure his P&J. He decided he would. Fortunately as after it was put into the tyre wall the bill was significant

I have always taken out insurance. Whilst I'm happy to pay for a service, clean up and a respray if I visit the gravel trap I would not like the bill of a trip into the tyrewall...I remember another large shunt at Folembray whilst we were on a PH day and there had been a long debate on the forum as to whether the owner should or should not insure his P&J. Gosh that's a blast from the past. I was there on the day at Caste Coombe and the guy in the Saxo was a friend of a friend. He ended up getting the car towed off circuit and then getting it 'recovered' from a convenient ditch if I recall correctly.http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CEYcFAEA1CQ

We did recognise the need for proper trackday insurance and my car was covered but unfortunately not his. To be fair it was supposed to be a fairly mild, regulated trackday with plenty of assertions from the marshalls about keeping your distance between cars and not overtaking on the corners etc. but there's no accounting for random and unfortunate mechanical failure!
