Is the e46 SMG shifter mechanical?

Hi all,

Quick question - obviously the paddles aren't, but does the gear stick itself mechanically change the gears or is it just a very well weighted/damped electronic switch?

It's a switch. The gears are all changed by the hydraulics.

The E46 SMG cars have the same physical gearbox as the manual cars but with the shifter replaced for some hydraulic selectors.

The ferrari 360 F1 cars have a similar setup I think.`

Edit: Re-read the original 'Q. As stated above - the stick is a switch.
