Escort Gearbox Problem Help Appreciated

i have a 1.8 td escort r reg and i had stopped then tried to pull away only to discover that the it wouldnt go into a gear and instead u can move the gearknob around for example from 1st to 5th

im not sure whether this is a failed gearbox or a slipped cog as the linkage appears to be working from what i can see through the engine bay

I am not a mechanic but from what you have explained i reckon a gallon of petrol and a box of swan vestas should fix your problem.
