When I read stories like this, it really does scare me. My son has not long turned 7, and to think that child is only 2 years older

It's absolutely awful that someone was having sex with this little when she was only 8, but do you think little boys don't get sexually abused? OK, I know there wouldn't be the potential of a boy giving birth at that age but that doesn't mean the effects would be any less to the child. Certainly in terms of serious physical abuse (leading to death), boys are even more likely to be victims than girls. By the time he's old enough to leave home, your little boy will be 10 times more likely to commit suicide, about 10 times as likely to be the victim of violence, even more likely to be killed. Perhaps that's not what you meant, but please don't think that your son's sex somehow makes him immune from harm, as in many ways he's actually at a vastly greater risk.

Just struck me as if you were burying your head in the sand a bit. Almost as if you were saying 'thank god I have a boy, nothing bad will ever happen'
As someone who is/was a boy, I only wish it was true. Penny-lope said:

That is why they publish these stories. When I read stories like this, it really does scare me. My son has not long turned 7, and to think that child is only 2 years older

The chance of children being sexually abused is statistically very very low.
However, newspapers don't sell if they publish reports of real, statistically likely events - like deaths due to car accidents, or diabetes or similar.
