Just bought a series 111
Discussion
Hi.
I've just agreed the purchase of a series 111 land rover! So I thought I'd say hi.

I've wanted one for a few years (since I saw one at a classic car show a few years back) and have been thinking about it on and off for ages, I've even brought a book on them and a few copies of land rover owner international (please don't tell anyone I brought LRO before I was an owner, I'll get in trouble with the magazine police)
Pic of it here:

it's got a few dents/scrapes and there is a bit of rust here and there (it actually has a couple of holes in the tailgate!) but it's had a new 2.5 engine fitted, and a new steering box and looks pretty solid underneath, I've seen cars costing much more that are much worse.
This was actually my first time driving a utility land rover. oh my god. I pride myself on being able to get into anything and driving it with confidence....classics, old vans modern Reanults (worse then any of the others, trust me) but this was something else...the first clue was when the owner had to put it in gear for me. So I practiced on the drive, juse finding gears...feeling like I was 16 again. Anyway, after nearly stalling it a few times we were off...hey this isn't so bad....going along at a fair old lick, in 4th by now...just a comfortable cruising speed...i look down and were doing all of 20mph. lol. So i push harder on the throttle....the back door start rattling...the door tops are waving about and I can't see the road anymore 'cos of the vibrations..look down...25! and then I tried to slow down for a junction...dear god. Now I drive track days but slowing this beast from 25 is much more difficult then getting a car slowed down for Quarry or paddock hill from 100+mph...the less said about the actual junction the better, needless to say it involved lots of arm twirling, all my strength and nearly broken wrists to get it round. oh and apologies to the guy in the citroen we held up while I couldn't find any forward gears...
So anyway, I loved it and should be picking it up in about 10 days time.
(actually toward the end of the test drive it got easier, i was over driving it...best to relax a bit and guide it rather then force it...)
One question...it's got 7 spoke wheels with pretty hardcore looking off road tyres. I will be getting the original wheels with it. I assume more road based tyres will help a bit? it seemed to wonder quite a bit (this despite a new steering box) my idea is to have an on-road and off-road set of wheels.
I'm also going to look at the brakes, they pull to one side on first application, although they are fine after that. I assume a slave cylinder is sticking or something? The owner told me about that after we got back..."oh, yeah...should have told you about that..they pull a bit, best to pump them first. Sorry."
oh yeah..another thing. Any friendly off-road/greenlaning groups near south bucks (i'm near High Wycombe)?
Cheers!
