boot wont open

my dad has jus phoned me and asked me to put this on for him, hes got a xj8. he reckons its a fuse? any ideas? where would the use be?

The key will open the boot manually. There is a keyhole next to the badge on the bootlid. It will be very stiff at first so you'll have to have faith in the strength of the key, but it will open.
