Not my 5 ltr Griff thank God but my 1998 4.6 Range Rover engine has just gone phut.Intermittant overheating has just been diagnosed as two inboard cylinders taking in water.Head casket is fine but apparently in the Rangie aluminium blocks of this vintage are known for their ability to become porous after a few miles i.e 60K + !!

Quickly sold it back to my local friendly supplying dealer who is bunging a new short engine into it before he sells it on.

Got a 3 month old X5 4.6 Sport arriving on Wednesday but am concerned that this problem is something that may affect the TVR V8 - comments???

Dont know enough to comment on porous blocks , but my V8i Disco and my Dads 4.6 Rangey both had to have the inlet manifold gaskets replaced due to coolant leaks.
Something that ,as yet, has'nt happened to the Tivver

All the rover v8 engines manufactured in a certain period will have this problem (in theory).
but the reality is that it's fairly un-common and can be sorted without resorting to replacing the complete engine or short motor

You machine out the old liner and fit a new one.

The main reason the gems engines suffer so bad with liner failures is mostly due to the high water temps the engine runs at the stat doesnt open till 96!! far too much for the poor old rv8 motor and the stat is in a pants place to your engine is running at 100 deg then the stat opens and all of a sunden you have cold water rushing in NOT GOOD!!

exactly pete thats why they are having so many failures, in my opinion ditch the turnip and go back to conventional stat

My 4.6 Rangie has a 88 and has a stat bypass, however it also went in exactly the same way, thankfully did not pay. Whats a turnip ?

The turnip is a nick name for the stat housing in the bottom hose, basically because it looks like a turnip!! i didn't think they came out with 88 deg stats?? you can buy an after market 92 but that is as low as they go??

I also heard that the newer engines were running leaner to get better emmisions and that could contribute to higher localised temps especially towards the rear cylinders.

Sorry for this Off Topic Post!

But I'm thinking about getting a Land-Rover as high-miler car ... is this still a common Problem on new cars? ( I think about getting the 2.5 Liter Diesel Engine ... and one of the main reasons for it is the 'reliability' ... am I mistaken on that thought? )
