Rediscovered the joy of working my ass off last week.
Discussion
On Friday morning, after working from 2AM till 8PM for a fortnight on various uni projects I'd let slip through being a wastrel student at an unprestigious uni, I handed in an assessment before a deadline that I had previously thought I had no chance in hell of ever meeting. It wasn't great; I might get a merit, but certainly no distinction, but months of sitting on my ass in an environment of fellow demotivated students had led to me forgetting just how great it feels to be working at 110%.
Of course, I spent the rest of the next two days guttered in celebration, but it's odd how the experience has ressurected the competitive desire to not just pass everything well, but to completely knock it out of the park and drive anyone who had any delusions of keeping up with me into despair. It feels great!
A decade of real-world drudgery and watching talentless schmoozers/loudmouths promoted over the guys who were actually commited and good at their jobs seems to have eroded any high-achiving work ethic quite badly, it's good to have it back. Anyone out there actually manage to keep up the level of motivation required to be a machine for months on end? I've traditionally blown most of my chances by being clever but undiciplined, but right now, I can't think of anything I'd rather do than work my ass into the ground for a few months straight.
I'll still probably end up flipping burgers at McD's in twenty years.

My ethos at Uni was similar, i just work better when under pressure but do know what you mean about tha feeling of achievement when you've worked at 110%! I still managed a First as well!Of course, I spent the rest of the next two days guttered in celebration, but it's odd how the experience has ressurected the competitive desire to not just pass everything well, but to completely knock it out of the park and drive anyone who had any delusions of keeping up with me into despair. Hmmm I have wondered if today's distractions (pistonheads, PS3 etc...) has reduced our constructive productivity?
Anyhow, I too cruise along until the 11th hour on key projects and items, and in day to day business situations rely on quick intuition to make up for a lack of preperation.
