Hi
I'm planning on moving home late March/April/early May time approx 150 miles away. I've been an old NTL customer since 2000 and currently a Virgin Media TV/phone/broadband customer using a desktop PC. Not too sure where I'm going to has cable, might be Sky instead as I've not even found the house/bought the place yet...just know I'm going to be located in the Hayling Island area ( darn sarf).
Can someone shed any light onto what's involved with computers when moving house? How do I let people know that my e.mail address may ( will it?) change? How long am I likely to be off-line? Is getting a laptop with wireless connection a good idea? thoughts are that I'd still be able to keep in touch.
Any suggestions please?

It's hardly the end of the world.

Ring companies, say you're moving - et voila.

Timescales depend on what you need doing, new BT line etc. I'd say realistically 2 weeks for the net into a new place (assuming normal levels of cockups).

If your new home doesnt have ntl/virgin then you will lose your e-mail address. Same goes if change ISP for whatever reason.

To avoid this you need your own domain etc, that still doesnt mean you can keep the ntl address tho.

Not really, you can easily have a Gmail address, or a Hotmail address, or a Yahoo mail address...

Anyway, for short-term connectivity, you need one of these:

call and speak to Virgin about a dial-up internet account if you need to keep your email address for whatever reason (before your cable account closes, that is).

Better to have a gmail account or your own domain name though (or both, that's what I do - my domain forwards mails to my gmail account).

How do you go about getting a Domain? I don't think I know what one is.

Go to www.register1.net and search for a domain you'd like - e.g. www.condor.com (which is taken, but you get the idea). Then pay £6 or whatever it is. You can then set it up to relay all mail to your domain (e.g. me@mydomain.com) to any other mailbox (e.g. your existing Hotmail account).

Other domain registrants are available. I have used www.me2uweb.com for many years for many domains, very good.

wavey Welcome - I live on the Island and you are right there is no cable here. Odd though that they did come and put all the ducting along the streets for cable and new places are built with the ability to have cable but so far nothing. I guess getting it across the stretch of water may have put them off.

Let us know when you are moved in, there are a few PHeaders on the Island beer

Thanks smile My brother and his family already live on the Island, and we used to live on the Seafront as children many years ago. I knew my brother had Sky, so I guess that's the only option. Shame about no cable though.

You need hosting - best for email(free) is Google Apps.

Search it, and follow the setup instructions smile
