Hi there,

I am lucky enough to have a big drive where the family diesel sits and a double garage where for a few years the Cerbera has sat with an empty space next to it.

I’ve always quite fancied a 355, but then I’d have two cars which aren’t really all-weather and all-traffic cars (respect to you guys who use the Cerb every day). So I was thinking about a sensible super-car which I could use whenever I fancied, even if it was going to be pissing down all day or I knew I’d be crawling along the motorway.

Yeah I know this is a real tough problem to have to deal with. Anyway, the options:

911 – technically brilliant but dirt common (in Cheshire I’d never find “my” grey 911 in the car park)

Maserati – big and possibly over-styled

Aston Martin – the big ones are too big and the small ones are pretty but a touch uninspiring

Gallardo – a bit flash for me and probably not so practical

Ferrari 360/430(?) – too flash and not that attractive

(I don’t mean to offend anyone with these comments, they’re just one person’s opinion. And I’m talking second hand, not that this affects the choice between the above too much)

So I’m left with what now seems to me the obvious car: Audi R8 (manual of course). Thoughts?

And there’s no need to tell me it won’t compare to the Cerb, that is kind of the point.

Cheers

Cooky

A suitable stable-mate for a Cerbera hey...something quick and 'all weather' fun to drive and not too flashy?

idea

Scrap that notion of the Audi, get a proper toy (and a half)

Sir, may I suggest

Lancia Delta Evo 2

Blinding performance, handling capabilities of a Go-cart, gorgeous looks and not in any way ostentatious.

very fast, practical, has already depreciated and will only go up in value and you don't see many about nowadays but still have a great presence on the road

Hey, let's just assume I'm really, really shallow and looks are half the point of the car ...

Others to consider (IMO of course!)

Morgan
Ferrari 348 (prices seem to be on the up)
Noble
Merc CL63 AMG (you said sensible)
Lotus Evora (see one in the flesh before dismissing)

Or a fancy classic?

Ferrari 550

Great VFM at the mo' and a true GT car.

I don't hanker after a Ferrari, except maybe one of these.

NSX - Hugely underated, very rare, very very low depreciation, and just like owning a TVR, you'll still get the piss taken out of you from the uninitiated for driving an 'inferior' marque.

Our 2005 Audi is broken. Has been since December. Has been broken in the same way 4 times in 40k miles. It has had a new head in that time amongst other less massive issues. After this cars issues (and the one before it too) - I'd definately strike it off the shortlist, especially given the response we have had from main dealers/Audi UK. We are currently waiting to hear whether it'll be sorted under a goodwill gesture or whether they will try and make us pay - we're not taking it lightly and the car will be traded in for something else as soon as its back.

GTR R35 all day long.

Personally, I'd "luxo barge" it rather than get anything to close to the Cerb (performance/handling etc.

Bentley Conti (proper one, not the new pretender) should do the job

It's a Big B I want to put next to the Cerb in the garage (when it gets built) - been looking at Turbo Rs (available at bit cheaper hehe) but I'd love a Conti.

Aston Martin, or the Maserati for me.

Aston for the looks, Maserati to be different to everyone else.

R8 could be fun though

Gets my vote. Very usable, beautiful, expoitable handling and not too "in yer face"

Went down to Le Mans in one a couple of years ago and have promised myself one ever since. I'm still waiting, but the Cerb isn't a bad place to be right now biggrin
