Go to Driver Max and download from the link. It's free, the program will scan your system and list all the up to date drivers for everything on your computer. You are then allowed to download 2 drivers a day on the free version. wink

I had that happen once, I don't have xp any more so doing this from memory. Go into local disc c properties & in there somewhere will be something like add/remove windows programmes or similar, go into there but it's not under sound but under something that you wouldn't think like games maybe. It will ask you to insert your xp disc.

Sorry for being a bit vague but as I said, I'm trying to remember. Also obviously this will only work if you had the same problem as I did but it's worth a try. I only found this out by accident when I was trying to load my games back on about three months after a clean re-install of xp, I had no sound at all for that time.

ADE, I'm sure if it was working before it should be working now?

Nice idea though.

Ok, just checking smile I only asked because I didn't when I had my problem reloading xp & although people probably think that I'm mad for posting my last reply that strange fix did replace the icon & sound.

Now I know you have an unrelated problem I can't really add anything else apart from, have you considered getting a cheap sound card? Just an option if you can't get the drivers for your motherboard sound.

Could it be a codec problem?

Yeah what are you trying to play?
Do you get the normal pings when you change the volume?
I am assuming you have run Windows Update until it finds no more updates? Also make sure you havent missed any optional updates.

Does the system have HD Audio?

If so, try installing this: http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/genericSoftware...

Doesn't matter if your computer is not a HP machine. This is a Microsoft driver, that rather stupidly, you can't download from Microsoft's site!
