Is it just me that gets riled by people calling the paper things with details of a party/wedding/christening "invites"?

I was under the impression that Invitation was the only word to be used in this instance and the mention of the "invite" just makes me irrationally annoyed?

Can it be cleared up once and for all as to the correct term for these papery things.

I think invites is just a slang abbreviation of invitation

certainly an accepted term!

They are invitations. OED has no 'Invite' as a noun, only a verb

End of.

I might now be forced to inflict serious pain on someone if they keep calling their wedding papery things "invites"

In a similar vein: amends.

No I cant make the amends to this report you cretin. If you would like me to amend it in light of your recommendations, that will be fine; I shall make the amendments you require.

While I am doing so, kindly fk off and learn to use your mother tongue.

A little strong perhaps, but it's endemic at work. I think that despite knowing better at some time in the past, everyone has forgotten that amends cannot be used in this sense!

Sorry, inadvertent transfer of an in-joke to another site. Apologies
