Apart from going on Dragons Den is it actually possible to come up with an idea, sell the idea to an appropriate company and sail off into the Caribbean sun?

I've come up with a few ideas that I think would really help out in veterinary surgery but how the hell do you go from an idea to a millionaire? Or at least somewhere in between..

OH is a vet so market research already carried out wink

I got back from the vets an hour ago, £200+ lighter and still I need to go back tomorrow with my cat.

Please invent antibiotic injectons that are cheaper than liquid gold smile

You would be better off posting in the business forum.

Patent it, build a prototype, ensure it meets all relevant standards, find a manufacturer, work out a pricing strategy, find a distributor, advertise, hope it sells, sail off into sunset. Easy as that.

Its kinda simple really... Manufacture a few of "invention item"... Take them around local vets and see if they want to buy some... if they like, take orders for them... manufacture more of "invention item" and continue....

Or... approach one of the companies that supply vetinary type places and get "invention item" in the catalogue....

I can't imagine an idea with no prototype, research or more importantly, patent is worth anything.
A watertight patent is the first step. To get that you will need comprehensive documentation and a prototype.

You should speak to a patent attorney. If you want you can PM me and I will happily advise you on the ins-and-outs or alternatively I can recommend an attorney in your neck of the woods with whom you could arrange a meeting.

How would one go about manufacturing items tho? Take the plans to an 'invention building' company, knock em out, send em out, hope they go down a storm then make some more?

I imagine that finding the capital to fund all this is the major stumbling block.

Over the years I've had quite a few people bring ideas to me with the notion that they have a great idea, we do the design in return for a share in the company, and almost without exception they have been dreadfull.

The 2 out of probably dozens we have taken on have done absolutely nothing but cost plenty.

On the other hand you have to try, I know that doesn't help but I thought I'd share!

You just lost the patent, because you published prior art... (I'll delete this in a few mins...you should too)
Unfortunately, that won't be good enough. We've all read the posting.

However, I can see some issues with it.

"How I could I prevent someone stealing my idea?"

Not posting it on a public forum would be a good start loserrofl

Yes, as randlemarcus said, be very careful of disclousure; it could destroy novelty of and damage your chances of getting or maintaining a good patent.

Your concept sounds very interesting by the way, getting it to work is a great step.

Pure luck in making it work! more a sort of a happy accident than design hehe

There is no harm in being super-cautious however Chartered patent attorneys are bound by professional regulations controlled by Royal Charter and so won't be knicking ideas from anyone.

But to be honest with you, unless they are for a water borne vessels, only a small proportion of patents are going enable anyone to 'sail off into the sunset'

But don't dismiss it as pure luck or happy accident! Essentially, luck = inventiveness. To get a patent, an invention must not only be novel, it must be inventive also. By inventive we mean 'non-obvious'. Strictly speaking, ff your solution had been obvious then it wouldn't have required any luck.

hehe I'd put it down to sheer stupidity in my case. I accidently did something with electric that you should never do nono and it was that 'error' that made the thing work.
